Department Information
The Department of Natural Sciences (NS) is one of three academic departments within the College of Sciences & Technology at the University of Houston-Downtown. The Department is committed to inclusive excellence for its students, faculty, and staff. It strives to develop a rich multicultural approach to education, service, and scholarship. Our mission is to prepare students for careers and science-related fields and graduate studies. The department offers high-quality instruction in the natural sciences and engagement in educational activities that foster greater appreciation and understanding of science in the greater Houston area.
The department provides a broad-based curriculum in natural sciences with baccalaureate degrees in biology, chemistry, and geosciences. We aim to offer students the opportunity to design a B.S. degree in biological and physical sciences, which allows students to obtain teacher certification in conjunction with the curriculum of the Department of Urban Education.
Job Summary
The Department of Natural Sciences at the UHD is accepting applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions in Biology with focus in the following three areas:
- Ecology or environmental biology or plant
- Organismal and/or behavioral biology
- Cell & Molecular Biology or Biochemistry
UHD is a teaching university and tenure-track faculty teach 21 contact hours over two long semesters. Teaching responsibilities for this position include first-year biology and upper-level biology courses based on expertise and the needs of the department. In addition to providing student-centered pedagogy in all courses, this position requires the establishment of a successful research program that actively engages undergraduate students. The faculty member is expected to pursue funding to support their research and to engage in service activities that support the mission of the department and UHD.
Required Qualifications
Hold a Ph.D. in biological sciences or related field
Preferred skills, knowledge, and abilities
Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching
Experience in or passion for engaging and mentoring undergraduate students in research

- A statement of teaching philosophy that emphasizes instructional strategies and student engagement and includes your experience/plan/interest in teaching nontraditional students in a multi-ethnic and multicultural environment.

- A copy of all unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts
