Assistant Director, Experiential Learning

General summary/purpose:

The Assistant Director, Experiential Learning is responsible for the ideation, implementation and overall management of experiential learning opportunities for Johns Hopkins PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows. The purpose of experiential learning initiatives is to provide predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees the resources needed to explore, prepare, experience, network and ultimately be inspired to pursue their life vision. The Assistant Director serves as a conduit, connecting PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows to people, organizations and opportunities.


One key program in the Experiential Learning portfolio is the Professional Development and Career Office (PDCO) internship program, the Biomedical Careers Initiative (BCI). The Assistant Director will manage all aspects of BCI including employer engagement, employer relationships, website management, faculty relations, marketing strategies, intern recruitment, internship placement, evaluation and outcome measurement, and compliance with institutional policies. Since spring 2014, nearly 80 PhD students have been selected for internships in industry R&D, policy, outreach, writing, commercialization, and consulting and the BCI website receives over 10,000 visits annually.


Strategically, the Assistant Director, Experiential Learning will liaise with faculty and department administrators to integrate experiential learning into the PhD curriculum and the postdoctoral training programs.

The Assistant Director will manage career connection opportunities for PDCO and work to increase employer and alumni connections to Johns Hopkins University (JHU) PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows. Career connections opportunities can include employer informational sessions, visits to employers, alumni mentor programs, job announcement sharing, and hiring events.


The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the PDCO in the East Baltimore office, who reports into the School of Medicine’s Office of the Vice Dean for Education. PDCO has a dotted line reporting structure to the Vice Provost for Integrated Learning and Life Design and the Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Education. The Assistant Director will work closely with the PHutures office on the Homewood campus to provide internships, employer and alumni connections, and other innovative experiential learning opportunities to all PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows across JHU.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

PDCO Internship Program, Biomedical Careers Initiative

  • Liaise with Hire Hopkins employer outreach professionals to identify companies and non-profits to contact about internship opportunities.
  • Work closely with university-wide administration to establish and implement internship procedures that are in accordance with the policies of each JHU School, as well as the international office when applicable
  • Work with the General Counsel Office when applicable, e.g. in developing agreements between the internship host organizations and JHU.
  • Process internship applications and develop/process memoranda of understanding and other required documents
  • Coach interested PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows on resumes, cover letters, and interviewing skills
  • Manage program costs and implement strategies that promote employer financial investments, grant funding and alumni support that offset institutional cost
  • Monitor internship placements and coach participants on strategies to achieve success
  • Evaluate internship placements and implement program modifications when needed. Work with the SOM Office of Assessment and Evaluation when applicable
  • Identify opportunities and strategies to increase participation in internship placements for all Jhu PhD students and postdoctoral fellow
  • Evaluate by, among other metrics, continually tracking outcomes and impact of internships on participants’ life design. Use all program evaluation to modify and improve program.
  • Engage stakeholders in program direction and outcomes

PDCO Mentorship Program

  • Work collaboratively with Hopkins Connect and SOM Alumni Relations to cultivate and retain PhD and Postdoctoral alumni mentors
  • Develop and lead training strategies that promote success in mentorship relationships
  • Oversee robust mentorship program that provides opportunities for PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows to connect with alumni.
  • Continually evaluate program by, among other metrics, tracking outcomes and impact. Use all program evaluation to modify and improve program.
  • Engage stakeholders in program direction and outcomes

PDCO Career Connections

  • Liaise with Hire Hopkins and PHutures offices to identify companies and non-profits to engage with JHU PhDs and Postdoctoral fellows
  • Educate employers on the JHU PhD and Postdoctoral talent pool
  • Develop and manage employer relations to increase participation in employer-focused events and programming
  • Facilitate sharing of job opportunities to JHU PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows
  • Partner with PHutures Office to manage employer events for PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows

Experiential Learning Initiatives

  • Work closely with Hopkins Connect, Hire Hopkins, faculty, departments and student and postdoctoral organizations to ideate innovative experiential experiences that inspire PhD students and postdoctoral fellows to define and pursue their life goals.

Other

  • Develop and monitor annual budget
  • Create reports and presentations for University leadership and stakeholders to explain benefits and impact of experiential learning and mentor programs
  • Work with the Development and Alumni Relations groups to develop and implement a donor plan to offset institutional costs for internships and experiential learning initiatives.
  • Oversee administration of the travel award
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master’s degree required, and a PhD preferred.
  • At least five years related work experience, to include a combination of the following:

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
