Communications Manager

General Summary/Purpose

The Communications Manager reports directly to the Director of Economic Development. The Communications Manager works as part of the Office of Economic Development team and interacts with content providers across the university.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The Communications Managerplans and coordinates communications and marketing strategies for the Office of Economic Development initiatives and programs. These communications provide information to leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, partners, supporters and the community; enhance the image and reputation of the Office of Economic Development; and reflect it strategic goals. This position acts as the key editorial contact for publications, websites and social media account on behalf of the Office of Economic Development.

This position must exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with staff and faculty. S/he must make decisions on how best to manage projects given short timeframes, relative strategic importance of projects, ease of substituting one project for another given staffing available, and the impact of failing to meet deadlines. The consequence of error in this area could be very serious for the university and health system as it concerns the public image and profile of the Office of Economic Development on a regional, national and international level.

Providing consistent information provides clarity, reduces redundancy, and offers significant cost savings and improvements in efficiency if done well.

Communications Strategy and Project Management:

  • Develops and executes communications and marketing strategies.
  • Works with the university and health system to clarify communication goals, design objectives, determine project timelines and budgets, and develop contingency plans to keep projects on track.
  • Evaluates publishing requirements and provides recommendations regarding media and format.
  • Manages projects and coordinates workflow of content providers, editors, designers, and external service providers.
  • Acts as liaison with editors and content providers to establish and meet production deadlines.
  • Works with other creative staff in University Communications to meet the Office of Economic Development needs.

Writing and editing services:

  • Implements a comprehensive editorial policy across print publications, websites and digital channels that is consistent with Johns Hopkins overall strategic communications goals.
  • Writes content for publications, websites and digital channels in collaboration with faculties and administrative units.
  • Edits for style, substance, and organization; reorganizes text to create consistency in grammar, format, message, and voice, recommends substantive editorial changes as needed.
  • Reviews, proofs, and fact-checks copy, and provides layout-ready copy according to style guide specifications.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

Bachelor's degree in related field.

  • Four (4) years related experience.
Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by theJHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of four (4) years’ related experience including experience with content development, ad copy writing or other editing work required.

Five (5) years of related experience preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Performance Competencies and Criteria:

  • Demonstrated understanding of marketing, communications, media relations, and usability best practices.
  • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal, presentation, and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork and motivational skills.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy, tact, and discretion when working with confidential and/or sensitive information and in dealing with various levels within the university.
  • Relevant disciplines include marketing, communications, journalism, or management.

  • Requires excellent knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Demonstrated experience in communications/marketing consulting, writing, and publishing in high-volume production environment, with both print and web output. Photography experience an asset.
  • Advanced understanding of digital media and social media and knowledge of web content management systems. Familiarity with blogs, wikis and basic HTML is an asset.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat and the Microsoft Office suite and familiarity with databases or other project management software is important.
  • Professional experience in a post-secondary institution or similar environment an asset.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
