Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Special Collections Archivist and Diversity Resident Librarian position is an 11-month (July 1 – May 31), time-limited position. This position will begin July 1, 2021 and continue through May 31, 2022, with the option of a 1 year renewal.

The Special Collections Archivist and Diversity Resident Librarian supports the mission of the Library Specialized Collections Department by creating ways for students, faculty, and community members to access the sources of the history and culture of Southeast North Carolina. Although the Archivist primarily does so by creating electronic finding aids as they arrange and describe manuscript collections, the person in this position will also provide reference services, create exhibits, participate in digitization projects, help write grants, and deliver information literacy instruction. The Special Collections Archivist and Diversity Resident Librarian is therefore integral to, and will receive training in carrying out, all functions of the department.

Daily tasks include providing expertise related to the preservation and management of collections in the various units that make up Library Specialized Collections, arranging and describing Special Collections and University Archives collections using ArchiveSpace, answering in-person and remote reference requests, managing student workers and interns, working with Technical Services Staff to catalog published materials, working with the Associate Director for Library Specialized Collections to implement deselection plans and solicit donations in accordance with collection development policies, filling shifts on the research help desk, collaborating with colleagues on information literacy instruction and student research projects, and performing duties related to service on library, university, and professional committees.

The Special Collections Archivist and Diversity Resident Librarian receives funding for professional development annually. In addition to this annual professional development allotment, the person in this position receives funds necessary take all classes required for completing the Society of American Archivists’ Digital Archives Specialist Certificate. The Library will also provide the funds necessary for the person in this position to take the Academy of Certified Archivists exam. The Associate Director for Library Specialized Collections will cooperate with the Special Collections Archivist and Diversity Resident Librarian to identify other professional development and mentorship opportunities, including those offered through the Association of College and Research Libraries Diversity Alliance, of which Randall Library is a member.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master of Library Science degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association, with degree conferred December 2019 or later

    Library Specialized Collections acquires, manages and preserves a variety of primary source and other specialized materials within Randall Library, including University Archives, Special Collections, and Government Information. It provides access to these materials for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and visiting scholars. Library Specialized Collections also coordinates exhibits of, and outreach activities using, materials housed in the department.
