The Performing & Visual Arts Librarian position serves as the liaison librarian to the Jordan College of Arts (JCA), with an emphasis on instructional services and support for new information/scholarly initiatives related to performing arts research. This position partners with faculty to provide course-integrated library instruction in support of programmatic student learning outcomes, develops and manages Butler Libraries’ Performing and Visual Arts collections, and provides research support for JCA faculty and students. This is a 12-month, continuing (non-tenured) faculty appointment and reports to the Associate Dean for Instruction and User Services. This position is expected to fulfill the requirements of faculty status through active contributions in the areas of librarianship, scholarship, and service and to contribute to building an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides course-integrated instruction to majors and programs in the Jordan College of the Arts, which includes: Music, Dance, Theatre, Arts Administration, and Art +Design.
  • Partners with JCA faculty and staff to identify needs and assess the effectiveness of library instruction for undergraduate and graduate JCA students.
  • Provides reference and research support to JCA students, faculty, and staff.
  • In alignment with the Library’s collection development policy, oversees the acquisition, retention, and maintenance of resources in multiple formats supporting the curricula of the Jordan College of the Arts. This oversight includes providing cataloging/metadata and processing guidance for these collections.
  • Recruits scholarly content from discipline faculty for inclusion in the digital repository and informs faculty and staff about scholarly communication issues (e.g. copyright).
  • Assists in supporting the Core Curriculum through information literacy instruction (e.g. First-Year Seminar).
  • Contributes to the development of library policies and promotes library policies, services, and resources through educational and outreach activities.
  • Engages in scholarly and creative activities related to librarianship and/or the performing and visual arts, including publications and presentations at the local, state, or national levels.
  • Participates in a service role on university, community, or professional committees at a local, state, or national level.
  • Stays informed about new technologies, pedagogies, and information resources through professional development and continuing education opportunities.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Teaching and Learning

  • Adapts and responds to the changing needs of student research and information behavior, paying particular attention to the needs of an emerging diverse student population.
  • Maintains knowledge of discipline-specific pedagogies and related research practices.
  • Actively engages with faculty as partners in programmatically integrating information literacy concepts and skills into the curriculum.
  • Uses sound instructional design practice to develop learning materials and instructional sessions in a variety of formats (e.g. face-to-face instruction, e-learning delivery, flipped classroom methods)
  • Measures instructional outcomes in order to ensure effectiveness of instructional initiatives.


Knowledge Management

  • In alignment with a collection development policy, strategically assesses acquisition, retention and maintenance of collections in all formats, addressing attention to underrepresented groups or cultures in collection building.
  • Creates research tools (e.g. tutorials, subject resource pages) to help students and faculty conduct research.
  • Discovers and recruits institutional scholarly output in one’s assigned liaison area.
  • Educates and informs faculty and the campus community about scholarly communication issues (e.g. copyright, intellectual property, open access issues).
  • Demonstrates a continual commitment to improvement of operations and services to improve performance and productivity.


Outreach and Communication

  • Provides consultation services that involve subject or other specialized areas of expertise.
  • Seeks to collaborate and partner with faculty and administrative staff in the educational and research process.
  • Effectively promotes library services and resources to users.
  • Anticipates how to be a vital partner in the changing research and learning enterprise.


Knowledge of Role / Expertise

  • Exhibits (or possesses or demonstrates) knowledge of music equivalent to that obtained in the acquisition of a Bachelor of Music degree.
  • Exhibits familiarity with the research needs of other performing art disciplines: art, dance, and theater and the visual arts also desirable
  • Possesses foreign language ability sufficient to recognize/translate into English basic musical terminology, instruments, musical genres and forms, etc. in Italian, French, and German.
  • Maintains a breadth of knowledge of technological possibilities and applications relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, openness, and receptivity to new ideas and approaches
  • Anticipates and adapts to new challenges, changing priorities, situations, and demands
  • Demonstrates excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.


Qualifications:

Master of Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, undergraduate degree in music or a related performing arts field, and ability to meet minimum qualifications for the rank of Assistant Professor as stated in 20.30.30.B.2.a of the Butler University Faculty Handbook.
