Visiting Assistant Professor in Theatre Studies/Performance Studies

Position: Full-time, 9 month, visiting faculty position (non-tenure track)

Date of Expected Hire: August 16, 2021

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The School of Theatre and Dance seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in Theatre Studies/Performance Studies. The successful candidate will work with undergraduate and graduate theatre artists in a variety of content areas related to theatre history, dramaturgy, and performance studies. The School is especially interested in applicants with any of the following areas of specialization that may include: Black, Latinx, Asian/Asian American, or Indigenous American theatre/performance. The position entails active participation in our learning community while finding innovative ways to engage in critical discourse across the arts and other disciplines.

Responsibilities:

• Teach in the School’s undergraduate and graduate curricula. Courses may include the following: Theatre History, Dramaturgy, Script Analysis, Directing, Autobiography in Literature and Performance, seminars in candidate’s area of specialization.
• Advise BA and BFA senior projects and MFA thesis projects.
• Serve on School, College, and University committees as assigned.
• Maintain active national and international research and publication profile in area(s) of specialization.
• Opportunity to direct or serve as production dramaturg in the mainstage season when appropriate and/or advise student dramaturgs as part of the mainstage season.

SCHOOL OF THEATRE + DANCE: The light-filled, state-of-the-art Nadine McGuire Theatre and Dance Pavilion is home to the School of Theatre + Dance (SoTD). The School’s international full-time faculty of 27 recognized artists and researchers, complemented by adjunct and guest faculty and staff, including full- and part-time professionals. The School offers MFA curricula in acting and in design/technology, which includes scene design, lighting design and costume technology; BFA programs in acting, musical theatre, scene design, lighting design and costume design; and a BA in general theatre. The School features two degree programs in dance designed to develop the individual voice of the dance artist, a BFA and a BA. Approximately 200 students major in the artistically diverse curricula of the School of Theatre + Dance. Through its production program, outreach and innovative programming, the School of Theatre + Dance provides multiple cultural opportunities annually to thousands of members of the University and the greater community. Minimum Qualifications: PhD or MFA in theatre, performance studies, or closely related field. Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances access, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications : The successful candidate will bring to the position:

• Experience teaching theatre history and/or dramaturgy at the university level.
• Professional experience as a production dramaturg and/or published scholarship in theatre history or performance studies
• Engagement in the field consistent with the expectations of a research-focused institution.
• Demonstrated aptitude for working toward structural and strategic change in relationship to antiracism and access, equity, and inclusion.
• Strong organizational, management, and communication skills.
