Job Summary

As a member of the Office of the Vice President for Research & Economic Development ( OVPRED ), and working closely with the University’s Cybersecurity team (Office of the CIO / CISO ) as well as Office of Information Technology ( OIT ), and Research Security Compliance. This position is responsible for providing cybersecurity assistance and guidance with multiple research programs primarily in regards to Controlled Unclassified Information ( CUI ) management.

Provides assistance with research governance, risks, and compliance by coordinating the development of University Research information security technical standards, guidelines, and procedures, based on a recognized framework of best practices and in support of Auburn University policies and regulations. This primary focus would include the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification ( CMMC ), NIST 800-171 and other contractual security requirements.

The Research Cybersecurity Manager will assist with preparing and maintaining system security plans (SSPs) for various research projects on campus.

Assist in ensuring appropriate security control implementation of the Research Electronic Data Capture System (REDCap); and Electronic Research Administration ( ERA ).

Directs security specialists (Research Security Team) within the OVPRED, as well as collaborates with University CISO and Cybersecurity personnel.

Essential Functions

Job Duties/Primary Responsibilities:
1.Mentoring the Research Cybersecurity team members, researchers, students and administration on Cybersecurity related matters.
2.Provides assistance and guidance for the Research Security Enclave, to include network security and security monitoring systems within the Research Security Enclave
3.Assisting with the creation of infrastructure designs of current and future research networks and incorporating appropriate mitigation of existing and emerging threats;
4.Identifying security design gaps in existing and proposed network architecture and recommending changes and enhancements and documenting within a plan of action and milestones ( POAM ).
5.Collaborates with the Auburn Office of Cybersecurity SOC in monitoring and remediating appropriate Research Cybersecurity events through the use of Security Incident Event Management ( SIEM ), both in the cloud and on premise.
6.Engages in professional development to maintain continual growth in professional skills and knowledge essential to the position.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of various security and regulatory compliance standards, such as Understanding and experience with, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ( HIPAA ), the Federal Information Security Management Act ( FISMA ) the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification ( CMMC ), NIST 800-171 and NIST 800-53.
• Extensive background and knowledge derived from experience in core cybersecurity and information technology concepts, and skills required at the most senior level.
• Experience in managing a cybersecurity department (preferred), technical knowledge of information technology, and cybersecurity practices and advanced degrees required.
• Knowledge of project and operations management to include team leadership skills including motivating team member and group processes, team collaboration, empowering, coaching, mentoring, training, ethical integrity, championing diversity and inclusiveness, and supervising staff.
• Ability to translate specific strategic information into operational programs.
• Demonstrated knowledge of cybersecurity concepts including malware, intrusion detection, risk analysis, threat/vulnerability management, system hardening, and business continuity.

This position requires industry-standard Information Assurance certifications appropriate to the position (Certified Information Security Manager ( CISM ), Certified Information Systems Security Professional ( CISSP ) or equivalent). Certified Information Systems Auditor ( CISA ) will also be considered.

Desired Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree in information technology or directly relevant discipline.
2. Management experience. Experience leading projects involving multiple team members can be considered as management experience.
