Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit
The Upward Bound (UB) program is a federally funded TRIO program dedicated to the preparation for, admission to, and successful completion of a college degree for eligible high school students. The UB program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse ( UWL ) provides services to residents in the La Crosse and Monroe Counties.
The UB Program offers weekly tutoring sessions with semester long programming covering test prep, advocacy & resourcefulness, college & career exploration, leadership development, study and work skill development. We also work on academic, personal and career advising. We plan college visits and have a 6-week summer residential program which allows student a college experience!
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Upward Bound, the Advisor assists the director and assistant director in coordinating programming; supervises students and staff at assigned tutoring sessions; assists with recruitment by identifying potential applicants in addition to maintaining communication with students as parents in the program. Most importantly, the Advisor provides academic and personal advising to individuals or groups to ensure progress through high school in regards to college and career exploration.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, or related field.
• Experience working with multicultural groups.
• Demonstrated ability to work with low income, culturally diverse high school students.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• A valid driver’s license (ability to obtain UWL driver authorization upon hire) and at least 25 years of age for our 15 passenger van policy.
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in education, counseling, social work or related field.
• Counseling certification and knowledge of Hmong language, culture and values.
• Knowledge of Wisconsin’s secondary and higher education systems and of higher education financial aid programs.
• Previous TRIO experience.
Physical Demands
• Some occasional lifting of objects up to 30 pounds.
• Outdoor and indoor locations dependent on activity, programming, or event.
Working conditions and environment
• Some evening and weekend hours required.
• Traveling from UWL to schools in the La Crosse and Monroe county for recruitment, advising, and/or tutoring on a weekly basis.
• Traveling and/or transporting participants and/or staff to tutoring sites, Saturday Events, and/or college visits.
Miscellaneous Information
• Advisor has the option to participate in the summer residential program.

• Assist in developing academic achievement and/or academic intervention plans for students.
• Communicate with parents regarding students’ academic progress and plans for higher education.

• Assist in supervising academic year tutoring sessions, Saturday events and college visits (requires working some evenings and Saturdays).
