Bennington College, one of the nation’s leading liberal arts institutions, seeks an entrepreneurial and strategic senior academic leader to serve as its next provost. Since its founding in 1932, Bennington has been a laboratory for new ideas and an intellectual home to countless artists, writers, dancers, activists, and thinkers who have shaped American culture. It is distinct among its peers for its commitment to an experiential, student-directed education that provides hands-on preparation for post-college life. Bennington was the first liberal arts institution in the nation to integrate classroom study with immersive annual internships, and this vital practice has never been more relevant than it is today. Although relatively small in size, Bennington is a doorway to the world, welcoming students and faculty from dozens of countries each year and empowering a diverse body of students to pursue paths of purpose and fulfillment.
Bennington is led today by President Laura R. Walker, who became the college’s 11th president on August 1, 2020. Prior to Bennington, Laura Walker served as the president and chief executive officer of New York Public Radio (NYPR) and as an executive fellow at Yale University. The next provost will join Bennington at an exciting moment as Walker leads the college in ambitious new directions, finding opportunity in the midst of a global pandemic to advance democracy, racial justice, and to help solve complex problems like climate change, while positioning the institution for a sustainable future in a changing higher education landscape.
Reporting to the president and collaborating closely with faculty, staff, and students, the provost is the chief academic officer of the college. The provost will help guide a unique academic enterprise, one with a cross-disciplinary and dynamic curriculum and a faculty body without departmental divisions or tenure. The next provost will be a visible, engaged, and active champion of faculty and students, a dynamic leader who has the tenacity and vibrancy to lead through a time of change and uncertainty, and someone who is deeply committed to Bennington’s vision for progressive liberal arts education in the 21st century. The provost will join Bennington at a transformative time as the College commits itself to being antiracist and making diversity, equity, and inclusion for all community members a top priority. The successful candidate will be a fearless advocate for DEI work - a leader well versed in organizational change and grounded in a deep desire to make progress in ways that are meaningful and authentic, and lay the foundation for every student to flourish—academically, professionally, emotionally, physically, and communally.
