The Department of Neurology is seeking a researchNurse Practitionerto provide support to leadership and investigators in the Neurofibromatosis Therapeutic Acceleration Program (NTAP). NTAP is a philanthropically funded research organization focused on developing effective therapies for plexiform and cutaneous neurofibromas, the two most common tumors afflicting patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). NTAP is within the Department of Neurology in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. NTAP uses a highly collaborative approach that brings together patients, clinicians, researchers, industry, and government to determine where resources are most effectively deployed to produce meaningful treatments for plexiform and cutaneous neurofibromas.

The research Nurse Practitioner will report directly to NTAP’s Executive Director and the Director of Clinical Research and indirectly to the principal investigators. The Research nurse practitioner’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, identifying appropriate patients, screening medical records, consenting study participants, performing data collection and entry, obtaining and processing specimens (e.g., saliva and blood samples), and organizing regulatory paperwork. The nurse practitioner will also have the following responsibilities:

Screening and Recruitment

  • Search the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Neurofibromatosis Center’s (JHCNC) database for individuals with NF1 considered that are eligible for trial enrollment.
  • Search NF clinic schedule on a weekly basis to identify patients that meet criteria for eligibility for a clinical trial.
  • Once potential study candidates are identified, performs screening procedures to confirm eligibility byusing protocol specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, documenting each potential participant’s eligibility or exclusion.
  • Aid in the recruitment process on a weekly basis and maintain an up-to-date database of patients that meet eligibility criteria
  • Conduction of Clinical Studies

  • Work with PIs to help them meet targets and milestones.
  • Reviews and develops a familiarity with the protocol, e.g., study proceedings and timelines, inclusion and exclusion criteria, confidentiality, privacy protections.
  • Assists PI in communication of study requirements to all individuals involved in the study. Documents date of training and signatures of study personnel trained on study specific training log.
  • Conducts or participates in the informed consent process and discussions with research participants, including answering any questions related to the study. Obtains appropriate signatures and dates on forms in appropriate places. Assures that amended consent forms are appropriately implemented and signed.
  • After informed consent is obtained, coordinates scheduling and performance of research studies by ensuring correct EPIC orders are placed and the patient is enrolled in CRMS.
  • Ensure timely interpretation of studies related to research.
  • Registers participants to the appropriate coordinating center (if multi-site study).
  • Coordinates participant tests and procedures.
  • Collects data as required by the protocol. Assures timely completion of Case Report Forms (CRFs).
  • Maintains study timelines.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of study supplies.
  • Completes study documentation and maintains study files in accordance with sponsor requirements and University policies and procedures including, but not limited to, consent forms, source documentation, narrative notes if applicable, case report forms, and investigational material accountability forms.
  • Retains all study records in accordance with sponsor requirements and university policies and procedures.
  • Maintains effective and ongoing communication with NTAP leadership, research participants and PI during the course of the study.
  • Assists PI in preparation of any modifications to the scientific protocol in accordance with federal regulations and university and sponsoring agency policies and procedures.
  • Works with the PI to manage the day to day activities of the study including problem solving, communication and protocol management.
  • Reporting

  • Promotes the ethical conduct of research by reporting good faith suspicions of misconduct in research.
  • Assists PI with scientific and compliance reporting requirements in accordance with NTAP protocols, Federal regulations and University policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the registration (if required) of the study at ClinicalTrials.gov and maintains current information on the site.
  • Project Closeout

  • Assists the PI in submission of accurate and timely closeout documents to NTAP, applicable federal agencies, university entities in accordance with the appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Arranges secure storage of study documents that will be maintained according to university policy or for the contracted length of time, whichever is longer.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

    JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

    Physical Requirements:

    Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
