Director, Ventures

General summary/purpose:

Reporting to the Sr. Director, FastForward, the Director, Ventures provides leadership to Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) to actively support the development of high value start-up companies commercializing JHU technology and to support/stimulate the growth of the startup ecosystem in Baltimore, Maryland. The Director, Ventures maintains strong business entrepreneur, venture/angel capital, industry, and faculty relationships to facilitate technology commercialization activities.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Creates and executes on venture capital outreach strategy for driving and managing the venture capital relationships for the University and FastForward Startups
  • Builds strong relationships with faculty, in collaboration with JHTV colleagues, in order to build a pipeline of high value projects with potential commercial impact
  • Builds strong relationships with FastForward company management teams to support the growth of FastFoward portfolio companies
  • Educates, guides, and mentors faculty and company management teams on fundraising and other business related topics
  • Creates and delivers educational programs on financing and funding for early stage companies for faculty, students, staff, entrepreneurs, and others in the JHU community
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with key Baltimore area stakeholders related to building and growing the Baltimore startup ecosystem
  • Identifies, vets, and connects technology development resources such as regulatory, product development, and other consulting services to faculty and startups
  • Represents JHTV and the University as an industry leader in technology transfer and entrepreneurial activities at conferences and meetings, and promotes and enhances the reputation of the office by speaking and writing in industry related forums
  • Guides and mentors licensing associates and other JHTV staff in evaluating opportunities to license technologies to start-ups and venture funded entities
  • Builds a business entrepreneur network to facilitate start-up vetting and formation
  • Maintains substantial expertise and understanding of fundraising and financing of startup companies, including knowledge of federal and Maryland State programs
  • Tracks, records, and communicates funding data regarding JHU startups, university peers, and industry trends

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

PhD in life or physical sciences, MBA or, law degree required. Minimum of 7 years technology commercialization and/or investment experience in industry or higher education is required.

Preferred qualifications:

Undergraduate or graduate degree in life or physical sciences preferred. Other advanced degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • Must have the ability to understand complex technologies, demonstrated by relevant technical training or industry or technology transfer experience.
  • Must have extensive venture or corporate senior management experience. Venture funding experience strongly desired.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the startup development and funding lifecycles.
  • Ability to multi-task under deadline pressure.
  • Must demonstrate a collegial and cooperative nature to be able to work effectively with senior and junior licensing associates, JHTV and University senior management, JHU faculty and outside companies and entrepreneurs.
  • Must be sensitive to faculty and early venture needs and work in accordance with university wide policies.

  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
