Lead French Language, Culture and Regional Studies Instructor, Mansfield Center, DCLCP
The Lead French Instructor of Language and Culture will develop curriculum and instruct U.S. military and government personnel in intensive language and culture courses delivered in person and over video-teleconferencing (VTC). The duration of each course ranges from one day to one year. While classes are in session, 5-6 hours of teaching per day is common per instructor, while 2-3 hours per day are used for lesson preparation, classroom management, administration and supplementary curriculum development. When courses are not in session, course materials are developed by the language instructors for publishing and for in-class use. The Lead Language Instructor is responsible for 5-6 hours of in class teaching daily and design of course curriculum and syllabus. The Lead Instructor supervises the instruction of other full time faculty within the language department and graduate teaching assistants.
The Lead Instructor will be dedicated to the improvement of the department and be able to provide constructive criticism and helpful solutions to other instructors and graduate Teaching Assistants. The Lead Instructor will possess adroit observational skills and be capable of offering fresh, creative solutions in difficult situations.
The Lead Instructor must be fluent in the French language and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English. The instructor is required to take an Oral Proficiency Interview and score superior in French and advanced in English prior to selection.
The Lead Instructor of French Language, Culture and Regional Studies will teach not only the language, but also teach cultural and regional studies courses in the target language or in English. Topics may include but are not limited to French and French-speaking areas’ geography, history, literature, natural resources, economy, government, ethnicities, etc.
The instructor must have a high level of knowledge in current teaching methodologies and be comfortable with teaching through technology using Video-Teleconferencing (VTCs), Smartboards, and iPads. Instructors must also be able to work productively in a group (team teaching, active coordination, extensive collaboration), and also work effectively in an independent mode. The instructor must be able to create and follow syllabi without oversight.
The position may be located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Missoula, Montana, or other location dependent upon mission requirements or at the request of our customers or as determined by the Director of the DCLCP. Due to instruction being conducted at multiple training sites, some travel may be required for instructors.
- Ph.D. in French (language and/or literature), linguistics (applied linguistics is preferred), history, anthropology, or any related field.
- Must have experience in curriculum development for French language materials. Instructors must develop curriculum based on the needs of the program and as required by DoD.
- Must have experience in instructing French language and culture.
- When creating a course for new students, assess student language capabilities, French instructor teaching schedule, and the optimal schedule for the course.

- Must have knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices in the classroom and experience utilizing advanced classroom technologies.

- Experience in intensive language instruction, particularly in a military or government setting.
- Knowledge and experience teaching French language, culture, area studies and historical studies.
