Woodbury University invites applications for an Academic Advisor. Reporting to the Title V HSI Grant Activity Director and the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Academic Advisor will support students in three new STEM undergraduate degree programs, Sustainable Practices, Construction Management, and Environmental Science. These programs provide high-demand career options for our students, many of whom are underrepresented in these fields. The Academic Advisor will collaborate with faculty and Career Services staff to develop and implement a centralized Advising program that supports program students in mapping degree plans to achieve their educational and career goals. The advisor will help students choose elective courses that support their plans; sequence those courses to meet enrollment, program, and prerequisite requirements; and maintain the plans as goals and circumstances change. The advisor liaises with faculty advisors who provide discipline-centered perspectives, a community outreach coordinator that supports work-based experiences, and a financial sustainability advisor.

The successful applicant must have a holistic view of undergraduate education. The position requires being able to work as an advocate for the student in two primary areas: academic, which involves working with program chairs and faculty advisors, and administrative, which involves working with student affairs, career services, financial aid, and the registrar’s office, including participation in the continued development of online advising and registration systems. This position will work as part of a team to create and implement a multi-faceted student support network to support students throughout their academic journey. We encourage candidates with professional experience and a demonstrated interest promoting an inclusive culture, including Black, Indigenous, and communities of color, in campus and community initiatives.

This position is funded by a Department of Education Title V grant through the Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program. The successful candidate will focus on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a professional advising program for the three new STEM programs during the five years of the grant but upon completion of the grant will work across departments in the university.

Salary and Benefits 

Salary Range - $45,724 to $50,295

  • Develops and implements an advising program that supports program students in mapping degree plans to achieve their educational and career goals.
  • Aids in course selection to ensure appropriate sequencing to meet enrollment, program, and prerequisite requirements, and maintain the plans and goals as circumstances change.
  • Collaborates with faculty and Career Services staff to develop and implement an advising program that supports student success in three new STEM programs.
  • Coordinates with Career Services to assist students with goal-setting and planning; current transfer, graduation, and graduate school requirements; and assist in ensuring appropriate course registration.
  • Structures the new advising program using concepts and guidelines from resources such as the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CASE), National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), and What Works Clearinghouse’s (WWC) Strategies for Post-Secondary Students in Developmental Education Practice Guide (2107).
  • Effectively manages and utilizes institution systems to monitor and provide information to support students and aid in overcoming obstacles to achieve academic goals.
  • Supports Academic Affairs with management of new student orientation activities related to academic advising.
  • Specific attention given to academically at-risk students.
  • Prepares reports for non-registered students and implements retention plan.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) based on the job functions:

  • A Campus Security Authority (CSA) is an individual, who by virtue of their university responsibilities and under the Clery Act, is designated to receive and report criminal incidents to the Department of Public Safety so that they may be included and published in the university’s Annual Security Report.


  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, student development/student affairs, or a related field.
  • Three years’ experience in education (preferably post-secondary).
  • Experience with undergraduate students, especially with incoming freshmen and transfer students.
  • Knowledge of higher education curricula and willingness to keep current with trends in higher education and all university academic programs.
  • Experience with diverse and unrepresented students and issues relevant to ethnic minority populations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including computer literacy with knowledge of word-processing and spreadsheets.
  • Availability for evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements: (Due to Covid-19 telecommute is available)

  • Close vision, hearing/listening, and clear speech.
  • Manual hand/fingers dexterity.
  • Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork, grasp lightly, and use of fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
  • Ability to utilize office equipment such as computers and copiers.
  • Works with/around and has verbal and face-to-face contact with others.
  • Works indoors in an office environment majority of the time.
  • Simple to complex reading, writing, clerical, and math ability.
  • Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
