Position: Adjunct Ballet Teacher/ Peabody Dance Training Program for Boys

Position Summary:

The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an Adjunct Ballet teaching position in the Dance Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, commencing immediately.

The successful candidate will be experienced in teaching classical ballet to students of all ages and levels (beginner to advanced) ages 7-18. This position will be assigned all-boys classes in the Dance Department’s tuition-free Estelle Dennis/Peabody Dance Training Program for Boys. The successful candidate will nurture an enthusiasm for ballet training among the young men in the program; create a welcoming and safe learning environment for students based on appropriate boundaries and the standards of dance class etiquette; work with the young men to develop self-discipline and mutual respect of their classmates; provide individual feedback and encouragement to improve ballet technique; and assist the Department Chair with assessing progress and placing the young men in classes to enable their growth.

Duties:

  • Teaching 3 all-boys classes at Peabody Preparatory Downtown campus on Tuesdays from 4:45 pm – 8:30 pm. Classes will meet for 14 weeks during the Preparatory fall semester and 14 weeks during the spring semester.
  • The teacher will also set and/or create choreography for the Dance Department’s year-end performances. Although most performance preparation takes place during regular class times, performance responsibilities include an additional 2 weeks of rehearsals at the end of the spring semester.

Located in the heart of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon Cultural District, the Peabody Institute was founded in 1857 as America’s first academy of music. Today, through its degree-granting Conservatory and its community-based Preparatory school of music and dance, Peabody trains musicians and dancers of every age and at every level.

The Peabody Preparatory shares space with the Peabody Conservatory in downtown Baltimore, and also has three satellite branches in the communities of Towson, Annapolis and Howard County, MD. The Preparatory has approximately 2,000 students studying all orchestral instruments, guitar, piano, voice, dance, theory, composition, early childhood, orchestra, chamber music and more.

The Preparatory’s dance department, established in 1914, is one of the oldest-continuously operating dance training centers in the United States. Throughout its remarkable life span, Preparatory Dance has pioneered new dance forms, mounted numerous collaborative projects, partnered with prominent figures in 20th and 21st century American dance, and produced accomplished professional dancers, choreographers, directors, and teachers. Preparatory Dance is keeping in step with the progression of American dance into the 21st century and remains committed to: offering high-quality dance training for students of all levels age 3 to adult; presenting imaginative professional-level performances; offering pre-professional ballet and modern dance summer intensives; partnering with our community through master classes, seminars, workshops, and other dance events – most offered free of charge; and training and supporting male dancers through the ground-breaking Estelle Dennis/Peabody Dance Training Program for Boys.

Qualifications:

  • Professional ballet performing experience and/or a bachelor’s degree in dance required.
  • Documented successful teaching experience required.
  • Preferred qualifications: success in teaching men’s ballet technique classes; experience coaching or teaching pas de deux/partnering classes; experience preparing pre-professional students for performances.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
