Primary Purpose of Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to perform electrical trades including but not limited to Commercial Electrical work and Welding. Positions may plan and diagram electrical systems, including the conduits of tubing or pipe often required by local electrical codes. Or, the electrician may work from blueprints provided by the general contractor, design engineer or project manager. Whether designing the system or working from blueprints, the electrician installs the conduits and runs the electrical wiring. These wires are usually terminated at switches, circuit breaker panels and relays. Commercial electricians wire instruments that control the power, lighting and heating units in buildings. Provide wiring for air conditioning and refrigeration units.
Understand generator operations and provide basic PM. Install and maintain wiring, control, and lighting systems. Install electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers. Identify electrical problems with a variety of testing devices. Repair or replace wiring, equipment, or fixtures using hand tools and power tools.
Using electrical test meters and ohmmeters, commercial electricians ensure the continuity of wiring to ascertain compatibility and safety of the components. These tests may be performed during the installation of a new electrical system, to ensure its proper performance. The tests are also used to locate shorts and system breaks. After locating the source of the problem, the electrician repairs or replaces the wiring and conduits as needed.
Commercial electricians work with many standard hand tools including sawzalls, screwdrivers, pliers and knives. Must be familiar with using power tools, test meters, pipe threaders and conduit benders.


Minimum Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s). Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate must possess working knowledge of codes pertaining to elevator maintenance and assisting in the installation of electrical systems; knowledge of electrical principles and their application to the maintenance, installation of electric distribution systems, devices and electrical generators; knowledge of the application and use of testing equipment utilized in checking and analyzing electrical systems; knowledgeable of operating a lift truck and trenching machine; ability to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and actively work to resolve the issues; ability to analyze and modify standard circuitry to improve its performance or to perform special effects; ability to accomplish tasks and processes accurately and completely; ability to communicate information to individuals or groups; ability to deliver presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience; ability to listen and respond appropriately to others; ability to understand applicable policies and procedures and maintain conditions that ensure a healthy and safe working environment;
