The Association of American Universities, an association of America’s leading research universities, seeks applications for the position of Associate Vice President for Immigration & International Issues (AVP). This position reports to the Vice President for Science Policy and Global Affairs.

The AVP serves as the association’s lead on immigration, international students and scholars, and other international issues. The AVP also plays a key role supporting AAU’s work in other areas, including science and security, export controls, science diplomacy, and related higher education and research policy and regulatory matters important to America’s leading research universities. The AVP serves as the staff spokesperson on, and will be the “go-to” source for, national and trade media on these sets of issues. The AVP will work with Congress, federal agencies, stakeholder groups, and the higher education community to advance the association’s work and will develop, negotiate, and execute advocacy strategies for current and anticipated legislative and executive branch proposals and policies.

The AVP will have a keen understanding of the legislative process and must have experience working closely with Congress and the executive branch. Candidates are also expected to have experience working with universities, higher education associations, business and industry organizations, and other organizations within coalitions. The AVP will navigate, develop, and maintain complex relationships across political lines with members of Congress; key congressional committees; congressional staff; relevant federal agency officials at the Department of State, Homeland Security, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and other federal research and security agencies; and key reporters/journalists.
