Associate Director for Population Sciences

PENN STATE CANCER INSTITUTE

Hershey, Pennsylvania

The Penn State Cancer Institute (PSCI) seeks candidates for the position of Associate Director for Population Sciences (AD). The PSCI is a dynamic hub of cancer research, care, and outreach within a world-class health system and The Pennsylvania State University (PSU). Serving 4.1 million people in central Pennsylvania in a state-of-the-art 178,000 sq. ft. clinical and research facility, the PSCI has an integrated structure and a collegial orientation supporting its goals of growth and excellence. With a diverse 28-county catchment area that includes communities of color in urban settings as well as rural populations in Appalachia, PSCI is uniquely positioned to advance the reach and impact of its population-based research program. The role of the AD presents a unique opportunity to contribute to this growth and to further develop a flourishing cancer institute in the later stages of seeking National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation.

The AD will be charged with: 1) managing and strategically developing the population-based research programs of the PSCI in addition to overseeing the newly-configured Cancer Control Program; 2) advancing a shared vision for cancer prevention and control across the University with the goal of strategically aligning resources and efforts; 3) developing initiatives that integrate population-based research into other PSCI-funded programs and institutional research efforts; 4) partnering with key units across PSU including colleges and institutes at University Park, Hershey, and commonwealth campuses to develop bi-directional engagement of PSCI members between and within the three research programs (Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis, Next-Generation Therapies, and Cancer Control), the Community Outreach and Engagement program overseen by the Office of Cancer Health Equity, and the Cancer Research Training and Education core; 5) increasing the impact of PSCI discoveries and information on the diverse communities in its broad catchment area; and 6) assisting the PSCI Director in identifying and recruiting exceptional population-based scientists with an interest in addressing cancer disparities in the PSCI catchment area.

As a member of the senior leadership team and reporting to the Director of the PSCI, the AD will participate in all key decision-making committees related to resource allocation, strategic planning, recruitment, and institutional initiatives for cancer research at large. The AD will partner with other senior leaders of PSCI to support and advance the vision of the Director and team. Together, the leadership team will maximize the research potential of one of the largest universities in the country while also identifying new ways to treat cancer and provide specialized care to the underserved populations in the region.

The AD will have a distinguished record in population-based cancer research and a doctoral level terminal degree in a related field. With an extensive track record as a federally-funded investigator focused on population-based cancer research, the AD will possess strong leadership skills and a management style that supports the mentoring of young investigators.

PSU has partnered with Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to help with this recruitment. Confidential inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted through the Isaacson, Miller website: http://www.imsearch.com/7475.
