General Summary/Purpose

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator and a lab manager, the lab technician is responsible for maintenance of the lab and acquiring and processing biospecimens.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work requires precision and attention to detail. Individual should have strong written communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which includes transport of biospecimens, processing of biospecimens following established protocols, entering specimen information into online databases, re-aliquoting samples and shipping them.
  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience and through specific training upon assuming this position.
  • Monitors lab inventory levels of reagents, kits and chemicals.
  • Follows weekly/monthly instrument calibration and validation protocols and maintaining detailed logs of each instrument.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Our lab like several other department laboratories monitors biospecimen inventory in -80 freezers 24/7. Rotating schedules to monitor freezer temperatures include weekend and holiday assignments and the need to come in when on call in case of an emergency.

This is a one-year assignment with the option to extend based upon continued funding and satisfactory job performance.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Life Science, Chemistry or a related scientific field.

Basic laboratory experience and experience working in a research lab.

Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
