The Whitman Career Center is seeking an assistant director to deliver career education and professional development programming, services, and resources for undergraduate finance and real estate students in the business school.

The assistant director will work to understand career interests and partner in developing strategies to support student engagement, along with supporting internship, full-time job searches, and other post-graduation plans for finance and real estate students. Additionally, the position works with undeclared students as part of general career advising and in conjunction with the IMPRESS program.

The candidate in this role will also work with global, national and local corporate partners and alumni to develop strategies and secure opportunities for students. The assistant director will have the responsibility to coordinate and manage large-scale career education programs, including career exploration events, industry-specific corporate visits, and alumni networking programs. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who evaluates student and corporate partner needs, develops strategies, and proactively takes appropriate action as a result.

The assistant director is responsible for maintaining, auditing, and analyzing internship and placement outcomes records with high attention to detail.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree is required and Master’s degree is highly desirable.

Minimum of 3-5 years of previous career counselling, recruiting, or placement experience preferred and experience with the unique needs of business students helpful.

Job Specific Qualifications

Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

Previous experience in career services advising across a diverse population is highly desirable.

Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and successfully manage multiple demands and priorities.

High capacity to meet deadlines, well-developed time management and organizational skills, and discretion in handling confidential information.

High levels of accountability follow through, and relationship management internally and externally are required.

Seeking experience in finance, real estate, and/or business or the ability and intention to deeply learn about the majors and industries. Intermediate technology skills required in Excel, database management, and online platforms are required.

Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends (career fairs, employer visits, events) and travel for student events, corporate relationship development, and conferences.

Responsibilities

Coaching, Advising, Teaching, and Training: Provide career counseling, advising, coaching, and advocacy for a global, diverse, and discerning business student population (e.g., career exploration, resume and cover letter writing, internship and job search strategy, interview preparation, and networking tips). Develop and implement unique career education programming for the Whitman student population utilizing career development theories and modern methodologies. Lead one-on-one and group sessions with students to facilitate skill development and explorations of industries. Deliver information in person, virtually, and through online resources based on best practices while addressing emerging student needs. Evaluate gaps in student engagement; create and execute plans to establish connections and relationships with student population.

Relationship Development and Employer Relations: Collaborate with faculty, alumni, students, and employers to foster relationships and develop programming while building learning and recruiting opportunities for Whitman students in collaboration with corporate relations, alumni engagement, development colleagues, and other programs at the University. Identify and cultivate relationships with employers in support of internship and full-time placement of Whitman students based on strategic needs. Partner with companies to set appropriate strategies to meet business hiring goals; includes travel.

Innovation and Strategy: Think creatively and proactively about professional development and career search experience for students. Pilot innovative approaches for building partnerships and engaging students and employers. Demonstrate excellent analytical skills while evaluating and impacting program needs, technologies, and resources.

Outcomes and Accountability: Maintain, audit, and analyze accurate and timely records for placement outcomes reporting for Whitman students in collaboration with the full Whitman Career Center team based on national reporting standards. Provide thoughtful, thorough, and timely responses and specialize in strategic, proactive outreach to all connected parties.
