The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications for a time-limited, full-time, twelve-month non- tenure track faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant Scientist in The Precision Space Systems Laboratory in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. Specific applications include drag-free inertial sensors and space laser interferometry for gravitational wave detection, Earth geodesy, and segmented space telescopes, as well as laser ranging, laser communications, and laser time-transfer.

The chosen candidate will be a technical lead for space avionics development, fabrication and testing. This includes the development of analog and digital control electronics, including FPGA and microprocessor software, lasers, optics and optoelectronics. This position will also mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in these projects and assist with technical and programmatic reports, journal articles and conference presentations.

The successful candidate is expected to have a doctoral degree in Mechanical and/or Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Astrophysics or a related field at the time of hiring as well as three years of post-doctoral research experience in flight instrumentation design. Knowledge and experience in the following topics are required: Design, development, fabrication, integration and testing, for space flight programs; Fiber-coupled lasers, LEDs and fiber amplifiers; High bandwidth pulsed/modulated current sources for lasers and diodes; Digital electronics, microprocessors, and FPGAs; Development of flight software and or firmware for microprocessors and FPGAs, including VHDL; Experience with laboratory experiments, including the use of vacuum systems, UF and IR light sources and detectors, data acquisition and instrumentation.
