The University of San Diego (USD) invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Student Affairs. USD is a Roman Catholic institution committed to preparing and empowering students to live fulfilling lives as responsible global citizens. Founded in 1949, USD is the youngest independent Catholic institution on the U.S. News & World Report list of top 100 universities in the United States. Today, the University of San Diego is a nationally ranked institution with 486 full time and 521 part-time faculty members and over 9,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. USD has a Carnegie classification of “Doctoral University: High Research Activity” and offers 43 bachelor’s degrees, 34 master’s degrees, JD, and DNP degrees, and five doctoral degrees. The 180-acre campus now houses buildings that encompass more than two million square feet and provides educational, administrative, residential, athletic, dining, and support services. The stunning campus has been praised for its Spanish Renaissance architecture and breathtaking views, overlooking San Diego, Mission Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.
In the Catholic tradition, the Student Affairs Division strives to create an inclusive, educational environment that motivates and supports student learning and personal development, serves the University community, and inspires students to make a positive contribution to society. At USD, the Student Affairs Division is comprised of the following functional areas: Dean of Students; Student Life; Student Wellness; Resource Management; Business Enterprises/Auxiliary Services; and Strategic Initiatives and Programs. The Student Affairs Division works collaboratively with Academic Affairs and all areas of the University to create an integrated learning environment. The Vice President facilitates opportunities for greater student engagement and better post-graduation outcomes and contributes significantly to each student’s development. Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President will provide general guidance and direction exercised over the administrative, programmatic, and auxiliary areas within the division. The Vice President for Student Affairs provides leadership, direction, supervision, evaluation, fiscal, and human resource management and oversees a division of over 187 administrators and staff and 553 student employees. The Vice President must serve as an effective leader of a highly complex organization.
The Vice President will serve as the chief student advocate who is responsible for the safety and well-being of all USD students. The Vice President will provide sound counsel to leadership and play a critical role in making policy decisions and determining the strategic direction of the division. The Vice President will foster an environment based on diversity, equity, and inclusion, both with regard to student needs, and guiding student organizations and government. A student-focused faith leader on campus, the Vice President is expected to be a practicing Catholic who possesses an awareness of and commitment to ethical conduct and compassionate service.
