Clinical Assistant Professor – CREATE Teacher Residency Program
The Department of Middle and Secondary Education at Georgia State University’s College of Education & Human Development invites applications for the non-tenure track position of Clinical Assistant Professor (Log #22-053) with the Collaboration and Reflection to Enhance Atlanta Teacher Effectiveness (CREATE) Teacher Residency Program, starting Summer or Fall 2021. This is a limited-term, grant-funded position with current funding expected through Summer 2023.
Primary responsibilities include supporting Georgia State University’s three-year CREATE teacher residency program, a partnership between Georgia State and Atlanta Public Schools (APS). This nine-month position with summer work will focus on improving the experiences of CREATE residents and other Georgia State student teachers who are simultaneously engaged in university coursework and student teaching in APS.
The clinical assistant professor will:
- Work closely with university supervisors and cooperating teachers in APS;
- Collaborate with other CREATE faculty and staff to examine and redesign resident coursework, programming and overall curriculum across the program to ensure curricular coherence and a commitment to racial justice throughout all initiatives and experiences;
- Work in partnership with Georgia State faculty and post-doctoral researchers to understand and document the impact of residency supports through critical lenses (e.g. critical pedagogy, critical race theory, critical whiteness studies); and
- Participate in presenting and publishing findings to impact the field of teacher preparation.
Other responsibilities will likely include co-facilitating courses and other professional learning spaces for CREATE residents with CREATE faculty and staff; collaboratively designing community-based Summer Resident Academies for residents; participating in Initial Teacher Preparation meetings and service opportunities in the department/college; teaching undergraduate courses for residents and other Georgia State preservice teachers; co-facilitating professional development for experienced educators in CREATE schools; and other assignments as needed to benefit the program.
The successful applicant will have an earned doctorate in teacher education or related field. Applicants should have a minimum of five years of experience in K-12 classrooms; experience teaching university teacher education courses and/or facilitating educator professional learning, particularly with a diverse group of teachers; and experience serving as a teacher-mentor or cooperating teacher.
Applicants with deep expertise in equity-centered elementary and middle level teacher development and coaching; a clear focus on anti-racist practices in teacher education, including an understanding of the racialized history of preservice teacher education; and experience facilitating deep conversations centered on educational equity, race and oppressive practices in schools are preferred.
Applicants with experience developing innovative systems of support for preservice teachers and particularly Black preservice teachers across the university and school spaces are particularly welcome.

About Georgia State University’s CREATE Teacher Residency Program
The CREATE program is currently funded through a U.S. Department of Education, Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grant. The program serves teacher candidates from the university as they move into the field of teaching at APS with an overall goal of supporting critically conscious, compassionate and skilled educators who are committed to practices of teaching that prioritize racial justice and interrupt inequities in schools. CREATE approaches this work from three angles simultaneously: (1) recruiting and supporting new teachers who want to start and stay in APS schools; (2) developing teacher leaders in APS/CREATE schools; and (3) addressing systemic induction challenges through deeper Georgia State-APS-community collaboration.
All CREATE residents are enrolled in a teacher preparation program at Georgia State during the first year of their residency – either the B.S.Ed. in Middle Level Education in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education or the B.S.Ed. in Elementary Education in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education. Faculty in these programs aim to prepare highly-skilled, compassionate and advocacy-oriented teachers whose content knowledge and instructional practice honor students’ diversity and promote equity. Coursework emphasizes political, historical and cultural community contexts and integrates a strong justice and equity orientation that aims to support teachers as change agents.
