Salary Range: $26.77 - $32.53 /hour

 

The Black Resource Center provides a supportive campus community space for the Black experience at UC San Diego. The BRC is committed to intra-community diversity and the development of the whole person. The BRC seeks to promote scholarship, foster leadership, and cultivate community for student success through the collaborative effort and support of faculty, staff, and the broader UC San Diego community.

 

The Black Resource Center seeks to create and implement programs and services, while partnering cross-campus, to support the recruitment, retention and graduation of students. The BRC also seeks to provide a fulfilling and nurturing campus experience for all who self-identify within the African Diaspora and global Black context.

 

The Assistant Director independently develops, plans, implements and evaluates programs, services and activities for the BRC. The Assistant Director, who assumes direct responsibility for the BRC in the absence of the Director, functions as the key architect in the development the BRC's programs, policies, and practices. The incumbent independently analyzes campus wide needs to develop a programmatic response. In conjunction with the Director, the incumbent also implements long-range planning and outreach that increases constituent engagement with the BRC and is the first point of contact for outside requests by community and campus groups for visits to, partnerships with, and usage of the BRC.

 

The Assistant Director works directly with the San Diego community on event development, campus visits and outreach activities, develops marketing strategies for programs, develops and executes outreach activities to student organizations, academic departments, and campus groups. This position provides essential assessment and analysis of the overall educational effectiveness of both continuing and first-time programming, as well as developing learning outcomes. In collaboration with the BRC Director, the BRC Assistant Director develops and implements collaborations to improve outcomes related to the recruitment, development, enrichment, inclusion, retention and student experience of Black students in all disciplines across the campus, and trains and provides day-to-day oversight to student interns and volunteers.

 

Additionally, this position provides operational and logistical support for the BRC as needed, including policy and procedure development and implementation, budget development process and budget monitoring for BRC programs as well as conducts the student intern selection process, training and day to day work flow management for the BRC interns and performs and/or delegates as needed the processing a variety of fiscal transactions including travel, payments, purchasing and other transactions.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and understanding of the experience of Black identified students in higher education. Familiarity with best practices and scholarly research focused on supporting Black identified students.

• Thorough knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion including an understanding of the historical and social context of diversity, equity and inclusion, and of the intersections of identities including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual-orientation, religious, and class background, and thorough understanding of the BRC mission.

• Proven knowledge of supervisory and personnel management skills and strategies to provide oversight of student employees and interns, including experience with training and evaluating the performance of diverse student personnel, providing day-to-day oversight.

• Proven background in educational program development including experience in diversity training development and facilitation, working with college level faculty, working with graduate students, educational background in diversity and social justice issues.

• Demonstrated experience developing workshops and diversity training activities for a variety of constituents.

• Demonstrated administrative, leadership and organizational skills in educational setting.

• Experience developing and implementing community outreach activities and working with a wide variety of constituents and groups including non-profit groups, businesses, student organizations, arts groups, etc.

• Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. Analytical skills to recognize problems, develop potential solutions and implement appropriate solutions. Proven background in conflict resolution, crisis management and lay-counseling with appropriate referral knowledge.

• Ability to read and understand complex and/or detailed documents such as proposals, contracts, policies, and procedures.

• Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
