Search for the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Community Living

University of San Francisco

San Francisco, CA

The University of San Francisco (USF) seeks a visionary leader in residential life to be the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Community Living (Assistant Dean or AD). Situated in one of the most vibrant and diverse cities in the world, USF provides its students opportunities to engage with the campus and the city in meaningful ways, academically, culturally, professionally, and spiritually.  The AD will build and lead a passionate team offering residential education that creates communities, provides a safe and supportive environment that inspires academic achievement, personal growth, and social responsibility, while supporting holistic student development within a social justice framework. With nearly 3,000 students living on-campus in a typical year, this is an opportunity to help these students achieve academic and professional success and make an immense impact across one of the nation’s most racially diverse universities.

USF is widely recognized nationally and internationally as a premier Jesuit, Catholic, urban university with a global perspective. Established as San Francisco's first institution of higher education in 1855, the University of San Francisco serves over 10,600 students in Arts and Sciences, Management, Law, Education, and Nursing and Health Professions. USF offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals, and the values and sensitivity necessary to be “people for others.” The University takes pride in educating leaders who are committed to creating a more humane and just world, inspired by the vision to “Change the World from Here.” USF has been recognized as among the nation’s universities with the highest proportion of international students.

Joining a vibrant Division of Student Life and reporting to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, the new AD will have the opportunity to hire and develop an Associate Director of Community Living and bring professional development to a talented team in order to shape the future leaders of Residential Life (ResLife). In addition, the AD will oversee the Office of Off Campus Living and the management and operation of the University’s food pantry and other basic needs. The AD will also provide departmental leadership on strategic enrollment management and student success initiatives by collaborating with other departments and serving on related task forces and special committees. Given that the position serves in an on-call duty capacity for senior-level responses, the new AD will be required to live on campus in a beautiful space designed for senior administrators. The AD will address a set of key opportunities and challenges:

  • Develop a cohesive vision for building community on and off-campus at the University of San Francisco;
  • Build and develop a diverse and dedicated residential life and off-campus housing team of future leaders in student affairs and residential education;
  • Understand and implement best practices as a subject matter expert in residential life, community building, and education;
  • Be a key leader in student success initiatives, within and beyond residential education and off-campus living; and
  • Frame discussions and champion proactive, transparent communication around the multitude of social issues impacting students at USF.
