The Director of the Prison Education Project will lead the Washington University (WU) Prison Education Project (PEP), a competitive liberal arts degree program for incarcerated students and prison staff in the Missouri Department of Corrections. PEP aims to bring WU’s intellectual rigor and educational standards to help qualifying incarcerated students earn college degrees and realize successful reentry into the community, and lower the rates of recidivism.

Responsibilities

Strategy, planning, and leadership for PEP: Facilitate and collaborate with University stakeholders, the Department of Corrections, and other partners. Support fundraising strategy. Coordinate advisory groups.

Program management: Provide oversight over all aspects of the program, including curriculum development and assessment, delivery of academic programs, and oversight of faculty and teaching assistants.

Administrative and operational oversight: Lead and direct all administrative and operational aspects of the PEP, including course scheduling, student registration, contracts, purchasing, budget oversight, agreements, advisory committees, external partnerships, and grant administration.

Oversee marketing and event planning: Build and promote visibility for PEP through web, print, multimedia, and emerging communication vehicles. Oversee planning, execution, and publicity for special events.

 

Preferred Experience
  • PhD with 5-7 years of progressive experience in prison education, with a focus on higher education.
  • Experience in prison education curriculum design and assessment, with substantive background in planning, promoting, and providing services for learners.
  • Demonstrated leadership and commitment to supporting underserved students, to nurturing relationships and working with incarcerated, returning, and adult learners.
  • Commitment to instructional excellence, faculty development, and learner success. Experience in fundraising and grant writing and reporting. Experience creating, managing and maintaining budgets including accurately projecting and updating income from funders.
Critical Skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships across audiences; connecting and interacting with empathy and diplomacy
  • Strong leadership skills, including ability to inspire a shared vision and promote a collaborative and supportive working environment
  • Strong analytical, organizational, time management and decision-making skills; detail-orientation
