The
Johns Hopkins University (JHU), one of the world’s premier research
universities, invites applications and nominations for the
inaugural role of Assistant Vice Provost (AVP) for Enrollment
Services. Housed in the Provost’s office and reporting to the
Executive Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, JHU seeks an
experienced and innovative leader who will successfully partner
across the university to coordinate university-wide registration,
financial aid, student accounts, and enrollment customer service
operations; addressing cross-divisional issues, and critical
university reporting and compliance requirements. The new AVP will
join Hopkins at a time of tremendous momentum and opportunity as
the university has embarked on a transformative effort to reimagine
student enrollment activities and overall delivery of student
services.
Under the leadership of President
Ronald Daniels, JHU has been deeply focused on a strategic vision
to create “One University” while removing barriers and fostering
cross-divisional collaboration. The university’s Student Services
Excellence Initiative (SSEI) has already made substantial
improvements to academic and support services and is building a new
shared service organization for enrollment services. This
substantial investment will provide for the creation of this new
position and an opportunity to help shape the future of enrollment
services at Johns Hopkins University.
The
ideal candidate will be a committed and experienced professional
who has thrived in complex, highly demanding, fast paced
environments of excellence where expectations for performance and
productivity are high. S/he will have experience as a student
enrollment professional, preferably in a variety of sub-disciplines
(registration, student accounts and/or financial aid) and brings a
deep familiarity with trends and challenges in the field. Working
in conjunction with the University Registrar and the Assistant Vice
Provost for Financial Aid, the Assistant VP should bring a record
of successful leadership, consensus-building, and an ability to
build sustaining and effective relationships with faculty, staff
and University leadership.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
TheAssistantVP will have responsibility for coordinating and overseeing the new enrollment shared services, which includes registration, financial aid and student accounts operations. TheAssistantVP will serve on theuniversity-wide Student Systems and Data Governance Committee and the Student Information System (SIS) Prioritization Sub-Committeeand be a key functional lead for the SSEI implementation effort. Core responsibilities for theAssistantVP include:-
Enhance
coordination and capability around enrollment services issues as
JHU embarks on a transformational initiative to improve student
services.
Provide strategic oversight and vision for the enrollment services
functions ensuring we take advantage of tremendous opportunity to
formalize processes and greatly improve efficiency across JHU
stakeholders inclusive of students, their families, faculty, and
academic leadership
Serve as
a voice and driver on university-wide reporting and compliance
issues and must work to foster greater communication and
collaboration with other functional units including Registration,
Financial Aid and Student Accounts. S/he will coordinate and
communicate information from the University level to colleagues at
each division while serving as a primary point of contact for other
units across the University on enrollment management related
issues.
Ensure
establishment of a university-wide business continuity plan for the
enrollment services function and manage any future shared service
operations and/or vendor relationships that directly support these
functions.
With
continued growth of interdisciplinary programs and course
offerings, collaborate closely with school-based leaders to obtain
a keen and nuanced understanding of the challenges around
cross-divisional registration, student accounts and financial aid
at Hopkins. S/he will bring the university-wide perspective to
tackling challenges around academic calendars and drive progress
towards a streamlined and improved student
experience.
Enhance communication and
information sharing among administrative units to improve
performance. S/he will have the opportunity to represent the
enrollment management perspective with university leadership to
anticipate future potential challenges and facilitate success.
Through presentation at meetings of the Council of Deans and the
Provost’s Council and in other settings, the AVP will advise on
academic policies and procedures.
Establish and maintain coordination mechanisms within
and across schools and functions. The opportunity exists to develop
a strong enterprise network that leverages the talents and
experiences of a dedicated colleagues across JHU. A standing
registration/financial aid/student accounts cross-functional
committee, for example, could encourage information sharing,
greater automation and efficiency, and provide opportunities for
sharing best practices and industry
trends.
Broadly
help identify issues and solve problems and provide thought
leadership on improving the student experience. S/he will provide
leadership in bringing changing information technology to bear on
enhancing business processes and service delivery and support
data-driven decision making.
Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of
the shared service organization for all of university-wide
enrollment services, including a dedicated customer service
organization.
Conduct compliance related activities, partnering with financial
aid and other functions as necessary to ensure efficient and timely
compliance with Title IV, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA), and other regulations.
Ensure accurate and consistent reporting of statistical information
for internal and external use and collaborating with institutional
research on the university-wide IPEDS report to the state and
federal government.
Oversee the development and procurement of advanced enrollment
services analytics to assist university leadership with decision
making.
Review, advise on, and enforce university-wide academic policies
(e.g. dual/joint degree agreements,
etc.).
Seek out
and identify professional development opportunities for enrollment
management professionals across Johns Hopkins to enhance
performance and collaboration.

Divisional academic policy (e.g. academic standing, grading
policies/grading scales, graduation
clearance policies, etc.); Compliance activities related to divisional accreditation; Divisional operations management, including registration processing, management of budget,
commencement exercises, etc.; Personnel management, including divisional resourcing decisions, performance management
and compensation for their staff;
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
- Seven-plus years of progressive experience in academic leadership specifically in registration and/or financial aid
- Master’s degree is required; a terminal degree is preferred.
Preferred qualifications:
- A terminal degree is preferred.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of educational leadership and administration, higher education structure and governance and factors that impact decision making at private research institutions.
- Ability to work within a large and complex university and tackle complex challenges with the savvy and sophistication to be successful.
- Excellent grasp of compliance standards required by federal and state laws and regulations regarding student records, privacy, reporting, and funding; knowledge of compliance standards for government reporting for international students and students eligible for VA benefits.
- Experience implementing and/or working with existing technologies used to support enrollment management functions, including student information systems.
- Awareness of emerging technology trends and how they may be used to improve enrollment management operations and student experience.
- Ability to negotiate effectively, build consensus and influence institutional decisions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of theory and practice of student development.
- Outstanding listening and written and verbal communication skills with a commitment to proactive communication, inclusiveness, transparency, and consensus-building; a visible and strong leader who values a collaborative environment. Superior presentation skills.
- Experience representing an institution’s perspective to external entities.
- A commitment to absolute data integrity, impeccable recordkeeping, and overall compliance with University, state, and federal regulations.
- A successful record of developing, implementing, and enforcing policies and processes that foster a sense of consistency and clarity in an organization.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
