Xavier University, through its Office of General Counsel, seeks an Associate General Counsel who is client centered and mission focused.

The Office of General Counsel provides legal counsel and representation to the University and its related entities on a wide variety of matters including employment law; risk management and regulatory compliance (such as Federal Civil Rights Laws, especially Titles VII & IX; Title IV of the Higher Education Act; the ADA and Section 504; the Clery Act; etc.); policy development and implementation; student affairs; governance; public relations; business transactions; contracts; real estate and construction; Ohio’s Public Records Act; a broad range of local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations; trademark and copyright issues; litigation; and other areas relevant to University affairs.

The Associate General Counsel will be expected to be proactive in the campus community, identifying and addressing risks that potentially conflict with mission, best practices and legal requirements; and, will facilitate training when necessary. In connection with this work, the Associate General Counsel shall always work with University colleagues in a collegial and supportive manner, mindful of foundational principles of academic freedom and shared governance. In addition, the Associate General Counsel will be required to invest the time to understand the matter of concern and listen to what may initially appear to constitute divergent ideas and perspectives so as to recommend solutions that account for such ideas and perspectives; and, in turn, must be prepared to make recommendations that not only resolve the matter of concern but that also take into consideration the impact on University resources.

The Associate General Counsel must have a strong commitment to the University’s mission, vision and values regardless of any religious or secular background and must also hold a strong commitment to principles of justice, diversity & inclusion, and leadership.

Minimum 5 years’ experience (greater experience and experience relevant to the field a definite plus) and JD required licensure in Ohio or achieving a license within 12 months are required. Experience with legal matters involving higher education a definite plus but not an absolute requirement.
