MALCOLM X COLLEGE
Malcolm X College (MXC) provides programs to students interested in completing a certificate or two-year Associate Degree in General Education, Nursing and the Health Sciences that will lead to careers in the high growth healthcare industry. The Simulation Center, skills labs, and simulation facilities within the new MXC campus provides a learning environment that allows students to engage in immersive real-life simulated health care experiences, providing experiential learning experiences that support effective competency based education and training to students. Computer based simulation devices, ranging from part task trainers, computer-enhanced mannequins, and virtual reality simulators, are some of the tools used in the MXC health simulation training laboratories. The Community Outreach Worker represents Malcolm X College (MXC) in the community areas surrounding the college, performing outreach activities to increase awareness of MXC and its role as one of the leading educational institutions for allied health programs, and a major provider of training for health science professionals.
The Community Outreach Worker provides a strong community presence, connecting with residents to provide information on the availability of the college’s academic and technical training programs in the health sciences, career opportunities in the health-care field, financial aid and other resources, and enrollment opportunities. This is currently a grant funded position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Establishes and maintains working relationships with community-based and faith based-organizations as an outreach representative for the City Colleges of Chicago, providing awareness of Malcolm X College’s campus location, facilities and resources.
• Implements community engagement plans to promote MXC’s profile and to strengthen its outreach efforts in the surrounding community, increasing residents awareness of MXC’s educational programs and vocational training opportunities.
• Attends community meetings, events, and other social gatherings to meet with community residents and distribute CCC branded materials providing information on MXC’s academic and technical training programs, financial aid, campus-based resources, and external support resources.
• Speaks to individuals and groups of interested residents about the allied health field and the types of jobs in health care to help them understand the various training programs and career opportunities in the health science profession.
• Presents information on MXC’s various academic and health science programs, campus facilities, available resources and other support services available to students to help them address personal and academic challenges preventing them from enrolling and succeeding.
• Provides interested individuals with referrals to MXC admissions/enrollment staff to begin the enrollment process. Follows up with individuals to provide additional guidance as needed and links them with appropriate college staff.
• Develops and maintains a database of contacts with community-based and faith-based organizations and makes available to appropriate college staff.
• Assists college and District staff responsible for organizing on and off campus events promoting the college’s programs, campus faculties, achievements and success stories to potential students and the general community.
• Attends professional development and training sessions to learn new strategies for community engagement and outreach, and improve efforts to attract community residents interested in gaining acceptance to allied health programs.
• Acts as a liaison between community-based organizations, local/state organizations and MX’s campus support services offices to maintain awareness of available services support students in the community achieve their educational goals.
• Prepares reports and maintains records on outreach activities and related work functions,
• Travels to assigned community areas surrounding Malcolm X College and throughout the District.
• Required to work some evenings and weekends to attend community meetings and events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
• One to two years of experience with recruiting and outreach at the community college level
• Experience with recruiting and outreach for academic or technical training programs in the health sciences is highly desirable
• Valid State of Illinois driver’s license
• May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of work, for which a monthly mileage stipend is provided
• Excellent oral communication and presentation/public speaking skills
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds
• Ability to work with diverse populations from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds
• Must be able and willing to travel to assigned community areas surrounding Malcolm X College and throughout the District
• Must be able and willing to work some evenings and weekends as required
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint)
