Job Summary

The supervisor for shift operations and training is responsible for providing leadership and supervision for the Office of Public Safety and Security, which includes all shift operational assignments and developing, tracking and coordinating training for departmental needs and county licensing requirements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and carries out programs, policies and procedures that ensure the security of university facilities and assets, including the safety of students, staff and visitors
  • Develops and maintains training programs in line with departmental objectives and county security licensing requirements, maintaining records of all training activities
  • Creates and administers training components based on best practices within the public safety field, ensuring utilization by the security team
  • Maintains and updates the departmental training program annually and ensures training objectives are met
  • Conducts security risk and threat assessment of satellite campuses
  • Serves as a supervisor of public safety, to include training and creating shift assignments based on call volume and data-driven statistics


Service Orientation

  • Works with all departments to identify safety concerns and safety-related items on campus and at satellite locations
  • Works with Student Involvement along with Residential Life to promote campus safety and prevention programs, providing training as needed


Communication, Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Suggests appropriate resources and referrals for students experiencing emotional or academic hardships
  • Works with all departments in implementation and training relative to emergency action plans and other areas of security
  • Assists department administrators in completing performance evaluations for staff


Planning, Organizing and Accountability

  • Collaborates with appropriate staff to ensure emergency operational plans are carried out for events on campus
  • Disseminates information to subordinates at daily briefings
  • Conducts annual Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CEPTED) evaluations in each building on campus as well as satellite locations to develop training procedures


Initiative, Problem Solving and Decision Making

  • Works with residential hall staff to develop and maintain training for emergency responses in dorms
  • Participates in Public Safety administrative tasks and committee assignments

Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience in public safety or law enforcement
  • Master’s degree in criminal justice administration or equivalent area of study preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer skills and familiarity with creating databases
  • Completion of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Incident Command System courses IS-100, IS-200, National Incident Management System (NIMS)-300, NIMS-400 and NIMS-700
  • Knowledge of the Clery Act, FEMA and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) regulations, NIMS, Title IX and associated regulations

  • Flexible hours required, including evenings, holidays, weekends or overnights
  • Availability for emergencies on campus required
  • Exposure to all types of weather and extreme temperatures
