Highlands is an open admissions university with over 70% Hispanic, Native American, or African American students and nearly 40% studying at the master’s degree level. The Department of English offers a B.A. in English with traditional, English education, and pre-professional tracks, and minors in English and in writing. We also offer an M.A. in English with concentrations in literature, creative writing, composition, and linguistics. The mission of the department is to foster intellectual growth, creativity, and professional success in the literary arts, including the publication of the literary journal the New Mexico Review.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching responsibilities (18 credit hours in the first year; 24 credit hours in subsequent years) include lower-level American literature surveys, upper-level and graduate courses in American literature, freshman composition, and other courses as assigned by the department.
In addition to teaching, the selected candidate will be expected to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; conduct research in area of specialization; and present research at scholarly conferences and in professional publications.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctorate or ABD in English or related field, specializing in American literature, by time of appointment, fall 2021;
Demonstrated experience in teaching, research, and writing
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred secondary specialization in Indigenous literature or African American literature
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
