Job Description:
The Department of Visual Art and Design [DOVAD] at Weber State University seeks an established educator/professional designer to lead our design area. This is a tenure track appointment at the assistant or associate professor level to begin July 2021. Rank will be determined based on candidate qualifications.

DOVAD values the examination of the world through diverse cultural discourses which inform pedagogy, scholarship and forms of collaboration with university, industry, local, and regional communities. We seek a faculty member who is a well-rounded designer committed to undergraduate teaching and mentoring, who is able to teach throughout the curriculum, understands emerging trends in the areas of graphic design and user experience, and is committed to inclusion and equity efforts in design practice.

We seek a candidate who can expand the areas of expertise within our department and extend departmental connections beyond the university. We are especially interested in candidates from underrepresented groups, and individuals who have experience working with diverse student and community populations.

Weber State University is a dual mission institution, providing associate, baccalaureate, and master's degree programs in liberal arts, sciences, and technical and professional fields.

Program Information
Weber State University offers a BFA in graphic design that includes the study of design thinking, principles, theory, and practices, with courses including typography, web design, interaction design, and the history of design. We recognize that the field of design is expanding, with increasing emphasis on interaction, new content structures, human-centric communication strategies, and emerging platforms. Graphic design is an integral part of DOVAD's academic offerings, which also include BFA and BA degrees in art, art education, and a minor in art history. In addition to teaching, design faculty mentor students in AIGA and other professional activities and reviews.

Faculty are eligible for research and professional development grants at the college and university level. There is also opportunity to collaborate with the newly established Matthew S. Browning Center for Design.


Job Duties:
Full-time faculty teaching load is 3/3. Teaching responsibilities will include design courses at all levels as well as design history. Full- time faculty in all disciplines teach foundation courses on a rotating basis. The successful candidate will collaborate with other design faculty and participate in program development. Department faculty are expected to maintain active professional practices contributing to their field, through exhibitions, publications, or other venues appropriate to their discipline. Active participation in service, community engagement, faculty governance at the departmental, college, and university level is also required.


Required Qualifications:
A terminal degree from an accredited university in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or other relevant field of study is required by July 1, 2021. ABD will also be considered.


Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred candidates will have expertise in design methodology, visual communication theory, digital and interactive technologies, human-centric design, socially-engaged design, and/or other contemporary design practices. Teaching experience at the college level is required. Professional client-based experience is a plus.
Commitment to inclusion and equity efforts in design practice, as well as experience with collegial and student mentorship are desirable. We seek candidates with experience supporting the learning needs of students from diverse and underserved backgrounds. The ideal candidate will also serve, promote, and advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice issues related to the arts and broader culture.

The department is also home to the Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery, which produces and mounts exhibitions of national and international scope, in addition to showing student works and works by regional artists. Weber State University is located in Ogden, Utah, home to The Monarch and Nine Rails Creative District. The City of Ogden is 35 miles north of Salt Lake City. Visual Acuity Requirements including color, depth perception and field of vision: Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading.

The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position: None. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
