Job Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Arizona campus is hiring an experienced Crew Lead - Grounds Maintenance to support the Facilities Management Team. Embry-Riddle's Prescott Campus is respected worldwide for cutting-edge instruction and training for tomorrow’s aviation, aerospace, security and intelligence leaders. Prescott is a mile-high city and its climate reflects seasonable weather excellent for flying. Daytime averages are 80°F in the summer and 45°F in the winter. At 5,000 ft. above sea level, it boasts a mild climate, clean air, pristine wilderness areas, and nearby national forests. The university is a small, private, residential university in the mountains of Arizona with approximately 3,500 students. Staff/faculty/student interaction is highly valued and is a central theme of our campus. It is located 100 miles north of Phoenix and 120 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

Provides basic supervision to Grounds personnel on a daily basis. Utilizing the Department computerized work management system AIM, responsible for implementing and executing the preventive maintenance grounds program. Responsibilities include planning, organizing and directing the day to day grounds maintenance, campus beautification and improvement of all campus grounds including but not limited to mowing, pesticide application for weed control, chemical treatment of athletic fields, lawns, trees and shrubs, irrigation, snow and ice removal, pruning, propagation, transplanting and removal of trees. Plans, schedules and performs inspections on the athletic fields and recreational facilities, landscaped grounds, parking lots, roads, fencing and drainage systems. Coordinate the installation of new and renovation of old landscaping including but not limited to rock, turf, trees, shrubs and flowerbeds. Coordinate the maintenance, renovation and repair of athletic fields and recreational facilities. Provide emergency response as appropriate to exterior hazardous conditions and assure that the policies of the University as well as all safety regulations are known and observed by grounds staff. Assist in campus event set ups as needed.

  • Develops, coordinates, establishes and executes a grounds maintenance/PM schedule in accord with the seasonal calendar, the University calendar and with current weather conditions to ensure service on a frequency necessary to maintain investment to the quality standards of appearance, plant health, cleanliness and public safety are attained on a daily basis.

  • Organizes, trains, leads, schedules, supervises and inspects grounds crews to carry out the tasks with a high level of craftsmanship.

  • Inspects completed assignments to ensure that satisfactory work quality, operating procedures, efficiency, progress, methods and practices, safety, and other established standards and requirements are satisfactorily met and maintained.

  • Evaluates available grounds products, standardizes products, fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides to achieve economy.

  • Responsible for coordination of special projects with outside grounds contractors.

  • Plans, develops and manages efficient, economical preventive maintenance of tools and equipment assigned to the general grounds maintenance section, including schedules and activity to ensure prolonged life, usefulness and safety of equipment to minimize breakdowns, failures, and hazards.

  • Requisition supplies and materials, and test new products; requisition new equipment and parts as needed.

  • Responsible for ice and snow removal as needed.

  • Maintain accurate records for chemical use.

  • Provide and maintain proper trash disposal containers, bike racks, outdoor seating, fountains and pools.

  • Responsible to maintain and install all campus road signage.

  • Responsible to maintain and repair all campus drives and parking lots.

  • Properly manage and maintain all grounds care for off-campus properties at Airport.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of Department and campus community.

  • Checks and insures staff have proper safety equipment and first aid supplies.

  • Maintains a functional awareness of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at ERAU such as biohazards, radiation, chemicals, etc. Follow established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards.

  • Inspects work assignments of immediate grounds crew for quality control and completion of tasks.

  • Assists in the preparation of employee performance evaluations.

  • Read and comprehend instructions, write information, and complete simple forms.

  • High school (or GED) level ability in spelling, grammar, basic composition, and math.

  • State of Arizona Valid Driver’s License

  • State of Arizona Dept. of Agriculture Certified Spray Applicator (Core, ROW, Ornamental) - REQUIRED OR MUST EARN WITHIN 90 DAYS FROM HIRE.

  • OSHA 10 certification preferred

  • Forklift, Scissor lift and aerial certification - REQUIRED OR MUST EARN WITHIN 90 DAYS FROM HIRE.

  • Ability to remain awake and alert at all times while working on campus.

  • Ability to be flexible and constantly adjust to changing priorities.

  • Ability to follow through and carry out assignments.

  • Problem-solving skills and sound judgement.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically.

  • Ability to work outside all 4 seasons.

  • Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.

  • Must be physically able to consistently perform job duties.

  • Skill to coordinate and direct grounds maintenance.

  • Ability to develop short and medium range grounds development plans.

  • Ability and skill to check own work/documentation for completion and accuracy of data.

  • Skill in operating trenchers, tractors, roto-tillers chippers, and other commonly used larger pieces of power driven grounds equipment.

  • Five to ten years of related experience is preferred
