Open Rank Faculty Position in Scenic/Set Design

College/School/Unit: College of Fine Arts
Department: Theatre & Dance
Posted: Dec 15, 2020
Apply By: Open until filled

Description

The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin seeks a full-time (tenure-track/non-tenure track) faculty member with a focus in Scenic/Set Design. Our aim is to serve as the ultimate creative incubator for the next generation of artists, designers, and creative leaders in theatre, dance, and narrative experiences. To that end, we strive to create the most diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution possible, and are committed to cultivating a faculty that reflects the experience and expertise of historically underrepresented groups. UT's Department of Theatre and Dance is one of the largest, well-established theatre and dance departments in the country, with 50 full-time faculty and staff, and 400 undergraduate and 70 graduate students.

Our creative and scholarly community fosters collaboration not only in the making of performance, but also in the delivery of the curriculum and the management of the program. The department is strongly committed to the creation of new work and the exploration of new ways of working. The Scenic/Set Design faculty member will join UT's dynamic Live Design program, and will collaborate with faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate students across all areas of design and production.

We seek candidates with expertise in communicating narrative experiences through design. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work and portfolio. They will also cultivate critical study, creative practice, and innovation in the classroom and beyond. They are expected to maintain an active agenda of scholarly research or creative professional practice, advise the M.F.A. Live Design cohort, and perform other academic duties.

Rank and tenure status commensurate with experience. Competitive salary. The position requires relocation to Austin, TX. Start Date: August 2021.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Evidence of successfully promoting and contributing to an anti-racist environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Terminal degree or an equivalent significant record of professional accomplishments in scenic/set design for narrative experiences.
  • Evidence of mentoring emerging artists in professional settings.
  • A commitment to new work.
  • Demonstrate strong skills in collaboration and communication.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A record of professional success and promise of future accomplishments that merit a tenured or tenure-track appointment at The University of Texas at Austin.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Record of experiential curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated cross-disciplinary approach to teaching and research.
  • Significant expertise in more than one area of scenic/set design.
  • Demonstrated successful and ethical leadership.
  • Evidence of working within a community of varied student, faculty, staff, and professional populations.

Review of applications will begin on January 25, 2021. The position will remain open until filled.

To apply for the position, please submit the following documents to Interfolio.
  • A one to two-page letter of application that speaks to the required and preferred qualifications of the position. The letter should include a statement of the applicant's activity or contributions to diversity, equity, inclusion, or anti-racism in climate and programs.
