Job Description
Description:
Postdoctoral research fellow position is available under the supervision of Dr. Jian Sheng in conducting a research project recently awarded by Office of Naval Research, Department of Defense to study shear resistant biofilm in both laminar and turbulent flow regimes. The goal of the project is to use microfluidic and meso-scale experimentation to understand three environmental insults on the formation processes and 3D architecture of shear-resistant (SR-)biofilms, which are the ubiquitous phenomena over ship hulls. Three environmental insults investigated in the project are surface landscapes (e.g. surface energy landscape, structured roughness, and anti-fouling coatings such as rGO and GO), flow shear (laminar and turbulent), and phenotypes (especially those genes and pathways that regulate the production of extracellular polymer substance (EPS), and changes in its composition).
The engineering postdoctoral fellow will be focusing on mesoscale experimentation on SR-biofilm in the realistic marine environment (i.e. turbulent flow and rough surfaces).
Responsibilities:
- Establishment of the biofilm-turbulent channel flow facility by
modifying an existing closed-loop turbulent channel flow
facility.
- Development of measurement suite integrating PIV, PLIF and
Digital Holographic Interferometry. Note that all techniques are
available in the lab.
- Conduct the mesoscale experiments at three Reynolds numbers
using 1 bacterial isolate, & two natural consortia.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in mechanical engineering in experimental fluid
mechanics involving flow measurement in turbulent flows, chemical
engineering in near wall transport, civil engineering,
environmental engineering with relevant experiences (above),
especially flow measurement technologies.
- Experimental experience with complex large-scale flow
experiments.
- Skills and familiarity with flow measurement techniques such as
PIV and/or PLIF.
- Proactive attitude towards new technologies and methodical
approach to complex experimentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Further experience in working with live microbial
system.
All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution's verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution's procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
