General Purpose of the Job:

The Research Data Manager will be responsible for management of large, complex data sets from a multi-site longitudinal study of HIV. The primary activities of this position are data quality assurance checks, management of research data, creation of new summary variables, creation of datasets for investigators, creation of data tables for reports and papers.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Research Data Manager will support research data collection and management activities as part of a data coordinating center for a study of HIV. Primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • Perform data cleaning, including identifying potential problems with study data and collaborating with study sites to resolve issues encountered
  • Create new summary variables
  • Merge, create, and recode variables to prepare data for analyses
  • Create datasets for analysis by other investigators
  • Create tables and figures in publication-quality form summarizing the results of statistical analyses
  • Write detailed documentation/specifications for analysis data sets and related files
  • Attend staff meetings and provide updates on status of projects
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline required.
  • Three (3) years of related experiencerequired.
  • Additional education (Master's level) may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience.For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Mastery of SAS, Stata, or R required. Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) proficiency.
  • Experience performing longitudinal data analysis and survival analysis.
  • Good problem-solving skills, including organizing and investigating possible solutions and presenting them to the team for discussion.
  • Good organizational, written and verbal communication skills in the preparation and presentation of results.
  • Good interpersonal skills in dealing with investigators and a “team-oriented” approach with other staff members and investigators.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
