Controller's Office Job Description

Job Summary

Support the accounting and compliance functions of the College. Process journal entries, review and post interdepartmental transfers, and reconcile accounts. Participate in monthly closing processes, including accrual calculation and posting for college inventory, accrued liabilities, deferred revenue; among others. Train stakeholders in the College’s budget and accounting system. Support and enforce College policies and procedures. Assist in the preparation of the quarterly financial packet, annual audited financial statements, and required filings. Support other members of the Controller and Finance department as appropriate. Participate in continual process change and improvement.

Essential Functions

General Accounting (85%)

Reconcile and monitor multiple general ledger accounts and create entries. Assist in the preparation of the audited financial statements, with lead responsibility in several areas. Participate in the reconciliations of college bank accounts related to operations, foreign activities, accounts payable, cash receipts, gift receipts, and credit cards. Complete the unclaimed check process. Create reconciling entries. Review, correct, and enter departmental journal entries in the general ledger system. Review and process external journal entries. Create and import adjusting journal entries. Assist in preparation, coordination, and implementation of general accounting policies at the College. Offer guidance and training to departments in the use of financial systems and with accounting matters.

Other Functions

Other (15%)

Assist the accounting, payroll and student employment teams in projects and processes. Support the accounts payable and cashier functions and serve as backup for absences.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated intermediate accounting knowledge; non-profit and higher education experience preferred.

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree and/or professional certification such as CPA preferred.

Skills

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated customer service experience in supporting users with accounting processes and systems. Deadline and detail oriented. Analytical approach to complicated reconciliation and data problems. Advanced MS Excel skill and proficiency with MS and Google suites and complex cloud-based financial systems. Familiarity with database queries and reports. Ability to organize and prioritize work, take initiative, resolve problems, and manage multiple tasks. Capacity to work independently and part of a team.
