Grinnell College is pleased to invite applications for the position of Director of the Language Learning Center (FT, 9 months). Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college with a strong tradition of social responsibility and of global engagement. Grinnell students are from diverse backgrounds and engaged in global learning: a quarter are domestic students of color, a fifth are international students, and over sixty percent participate in some form of learning in other countries.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of the Language Learning Center (LLC) plays an essential role within the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) at Grinnell College to promote and coordinate language learning, as part of the College’s overall internationalization efforts. The Director manages the Alternative Language Study Option (ALSO), facilitates the language tutor program, works with the Office of International Student Affairs on administering the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program, coordinates language learning pedagogy programming in partnership with all Grinnell College’s language departments, and contributes to other campus internationalization efforts by IGE. Duties include: hiring, training and mentoring peer language tutors, assisting with the “on-boarding” of foreign language assistants and fellows, developing assessment plans and tools for language departments, and creating outreach programs to integrate language study into the intellectual life of Grinnell students. In addition, the Director serves as the lead for intercultural learning within IGE and will create and administer programmatic workshops, events and contribute to cross-cultural pedagogy.

The Director of LLC manages and oversees the Alternative Language Study Option (ALSO) program including hiring, training and mentoring peer language tutors, manages the peer tutoring programs, develops assessment plans and tools for language departments, and develops outreach programs to integrate language study into the intellectual life of Grinnell students. In addition, the Director serves as the lead for intercultural learning within IGE, will create and administer programmatic workshops and events, and will cross-cultural pedagogy.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree with strong international content in educational subject area and five years of experience.

 

PREFERRED

5-7 years experience teaching a foreign language outside English within a higher education setting
-5-7 years of work experience in language learning pedagogy
– Experience building and teaching intercultural communication pedagogy and courses
- Proficiency in a second language and/or experience living, working, and/or studying abroad.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds
- Knowledge of the liberal arts .
