Position Summary:

The Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) is a research and development organization within the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education. PSL develops unique instrumentation solutions used in scientific research programs all over the world. Our expertise spans the entire engineering process from initial conceptual design, through engineering development, fabrication, testing, and on-site installation. We have experience with projects at every scale and level of complexity.

The Electrical Engineer position will provide the Electrical Engineering group with expertise and advice on strategy, design, and plans for all PSL projects. The position will communicate and collaborate with researchers, scientists, and faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus as well as private industry and international collaborators.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

BS Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field is required. MS Degree is preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

-Minimum of five years design experience supporting complex projects.
-Experience in the development of component-level analog and digital circuits, component selection, electronic packaging, electrical safety assurance, and environmental testing.
- Experience using electronic simulation software (SPICE or similar), electrical CAD software (Altium Designer, SolidWorks, or similar), and Failure-Mode and Effects Analysis.

-Experience supporting complex and dynamic projects in Research and Development environments.
-Leadership in the design, construction, and testing of custom electronic equipment from initial concept to final installation.
-Working with new and existing clients to understand their requirements, develop a range of design options, establish budgets and schedules, and report progress.
-Evaluating technologies and practices to establish baselines for the development of reliable and cost-effective Engineering solutions.
-Experience providing training and support for personnel completing installations, diagnostics, and repairs in remote locations.
-Selection and configuration of variable-frequency motor drives, Programmable Logic Controllers, and PID process controls.
-Selection and installation of sensors used to measure temperature, level, flow, pressure, force, position, and motion.
-Programming experience.
