UM’s School of Theatre & Dance, a production-oriented program committed to seeking candidates who are driven by vision, access, equity, and inclusion, seeks an Assistant Professor of Dance to teach beginning to advanced modern/contemporary dance technique with a somatic-based perspective, all levels of creative practice, and dance anatomy and kinesiology. Additional qualifications in any of the following areas are highly desired: interdisciplinary and collaborative practices, art as activism, dance as a healing art, dance for camera. Other responsibilities include setting choreographic work on students, producing dance concerts, organizing/directing guest-artist residencies, student academic and choreographic advising, administrative duties, serving on School and University committees, and recruitment. This is a tenure-track position.

The School of Theatre and Dance is one of four schools within the College of the Arts and Media, along with the schools of Journalism, Music, and Visual and Media Arts. A BA in dance and dance minors are currently offered. Modern performance spaces include a 500-seat proscenium theatre, a multiform theatre, a fully tech-supported studio theatre, plus one more beautifully spacious dance studio. Support spaces include scenery, props, costumes, lighting, and sound production shops. The Dance Program at UM is a close-knit community of dancers with a supportive, engaged faculty. Our program is of a size that enables ongoing personal feedback to our majors, a critical component of our pedagogical approach. We offer multiple choreographic, performance, and teaching opportunities for undergraduate dance majors on campus, in the greater Missoula community, and at universities throughout the Northwest through our ongoing participation in the Northwest Conference of ACDA.

Primary Duties: Primary duties include teaching, scholarship, and service. Teaching responsibilities may include a combination of required and elective courses.

Qualifications
  • MFA in dance
  • Certification Program in Laban Movement Studies (title of CMA)
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching
    • Ability to teach all levels of modern/contemporary dance technique in dance degree program, across school-wide curriculum, and for general-education courses
    • Ability to teach all levels of improvisation and dance composition
    • Ability to teach introductory level jazz, ballet, or musical-theatre styles
    • Evidence of excellence in choreography, creative work, and/or scholarly work in dance
    • Ability to mentor students and collaborate with colleagues in the University setting
    • Demonstrated commitment to quality teaching and promoting an inclusive educational environment that affirms the value of diversity
