An exciting evolution is underway as Yukon College has become Canada’s first university in the North – Yukon University. Yukon University is a flexible, post-secondary institution grounded in research and education relevant to the North. YukonU prioritizes the uniqueness of the North as a driving factor in all that they do to preserve, thrive and grow the Yukon, together. With tailored learning opportunities and programs, the University’s thirteen campuses play a critical role in delivering education throughout the Yukon.

Yukon University will grow and be responsive to its values as a northern institution, prioritizing the uniqueness of the North as a driving factor in all that it does. With this in mind, YukonU will build on existing strengths and will be known for unique, relevant, niche programming and research in the areas of:  Indigenous self-determination and governance; climate change – society and environment; and resource development, technology and innovation.

The Institution currently serves 1,200 full and part-time credit students and over 4,400 non-credit students each year, supported by 270 full time and 310 part time faculty and staff across 13 campuses in the Yukon. Nearly 30% of all students identify as First Nation and the institution has launched the first Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Governance in Canada - entirely co-designed with Yukon First Nations.

Yukon University is already a leader in student satisfaction and research, metrics YukonU will look to build upon. Student surveys have found extremely strong support, with 96% of student respondents in a recent survey agreeing that the University offers a good learning environment. In research, prior to its transition to YukonU, the College ranked first among all colleges in Canada for research intensity and third and fifth respectively for research funding and partnerships.

The ideal candidate is known to be an inspiring educational leader, highly effective at bringing people together to focus on the vision and strategy of an organization. Truly a champion for higher education, the new President will bring a passion for students and student learning and an appreciation and respect for faculty and staff. The President will embrace a teaching focused institution, research and the critical role of a post-secondary institution in society and the North in particular.

This is an exciting opportunity for a leader to bring their passion, authenticity, creativity and people-engaged leadership to a dynamic new University and enhance the impact that YukonU has on the broader communities it serves.
