Laboratory Technical Assistant

Biology

JOB SUMMARY:

Provide lab support for faculty in the Biology Department in preparing research and teaching lab experiments.

REPORTS TO: Chair of Biology

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Lab-Based Duties:
  1. Prepare media, solutions, and sterile materials for Biology Department courses and faculty research, as requested with adequate notice by the faculty and teaching assistants.
  2. Wash and maintain glassware for Biology Department. Clean cages, vials and other equipment related to the animal facility.
  3. Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting student labs. A proper disinfecting protocol will be in place and needs to be followed.
  4. Ensure proper disposal of waste (including chemical and biological waste and hazardous items such as broken glassware and used syringe needles) from teaching and research labs in accordance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and state and Federal regulations. Such waste shall be brought to the media prep area by the teaching assistants, faculty, staff, and research students with proper labeling and appropriate safety precautions.
  5. Aid departmental teaching assistants for all lab classes as needed, e.g. instructing in proper safety procedures, in operation of water purifying system and autoclave, in media preparation, sterilization, and waste disposal, and in locating chemicals, glassware, and other equipment. The teaching assistants for Bio 111, 112 primarily report to the lab preparer, but in his/her absence can seek the aid of the technical assistant.
  6. Oversee maintenance and ensure proper function of major departmental equipment including glassware washers, autoclaves, and water purifying systems.
  7. Maintain inventory of other departmental equipment and file for instructions for use of equipment.
  8. Oversee maintenance and ensure proper function of laboratories and lab equipment, except for the Bio 111, 112 lab and equipment whose maintenance and proper function shall be the responsibility of the lab preparer. Coordinate with repair persons for major equipment.
  9. When the technical assistant is absent, the above tasks may be carried out by the lab preparer as needed, especially task 2, 3, and 4.
  10. Maintain inventory of departmental chemicals, media, stains, and other stockroom items, and restock as needed.
  11. Maintain inventory, records, and supplies relating to chemical safety, including files of chemical MSDS records.
  12. Act as departmental Safety Coordinator.
  13. Provide chemical safety training for new teaching assistants and research students.
  14. Facilitate changes in departmental space use as directed by chair of department, e.g. help in moving equipment and supplies in or out of rooms during renovations.
  15. Supervise assigned student assistant, who shall aid the technical assistant in any of the above tasks as directed by the technical assistant.
  16. Process alcohol requests.
  17. Coordinates deliveries of large items (including gas deliveries).
  18. Other duties as determined by the chair

Documentation and Information Management:
  1. Oversee the SOP's for cleaning and disinfecting labs
  2. Prepare and print materials such as letters, memoranda, forms, purchase orders and vouchers, using computers and relevant peripheral equipment.
  3. Compose and respond to routine correspondence.
  4. Proofread and edit documents for accuracy, formatting and completeness.
  5. Use office software packages such as Word and Excel in document preparation, file maintenance and report generation.
  6. Collect information or data from various sources; file and retrieve books, documents and/or data as needed. Update existing files.
  7. Create and/or maintain filing systems.
  8. Retrieve and format electronic data; compile and merge data from various media and sources.
  9. Prepare and process various forms, e.g., admissions forms and other forms.
  10. Prepare charts, graphs, or tables for presentations, reports, and/or interoffice communications.
  11. Maintain financial and/or student records and databases, and update them as necessary.

Communications and Customer Service:
  1. Provide information, as directed, to faculty, students, employees, and the general public.
  2. Interact with students, staff and administrators throughout the University to resolve problems.
  3. Respond to routine inquiries regarding departmental matters.
  4. Answer telephone calls; screen incoming calls and forwards/refers calls; assist in maintaining up-to-date mailing and telephone directories.
  5. Furnish information on the department's rules and regulations, when authorized.
  6. Interview and/or supervise student employees, Interns, Volunteers, etc.
  7. Communicate with other academic or administrative departments or outside agencies to expedite the processing of paperwork and departmental tasks or answer inquiries.

Transaction Processing:
  1. Prepare routine reports, including drafts, using information received from various sources.
  2. Verify inventory and supplies reports on request. Order supplies as needed.
  3. Complete Time & Leave calculations and keep up-to-date records.
  4. Prepare work orders.

Other:
  1. May serve on committees when authorized.
  2. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Able to prepare solutions for a biological laboratory.
  2. Ability to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc.
  3. Good organization skills and attention to detail.
  4. Good interpersonal skills.
  5. Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively and accurately.
  6. Ability to be discrete and maintain high confidentiality on a wide range of issues.
  7. Good verbal and writing skills.
  8. Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  9. Good computer skills for using Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Administrative Systems and E-mail.
  10. Ability to work with students and colleagues in a diverse environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Ability to sit at a desk for long periods of time.
  2. Ability to work on a computer for long periods of time.
  3. Ability to open drawers and file paperwork.
  4. Ability to lift at least 20 lbs.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Bachelor's degree is required.
  2. Master's degree preferred.
  3. Experience working in a biological or chemical laboratory.
