Contingent upon approval of the Board of Trustees, the Art Department at Whitman College is seeking candidates for a one-year position in Art, with expertise in Ceramics, at the rank of visiting assistant professor, beginning August 2021. An MFA and an active record of professional practice, with knowledge of contemporary theory are required. College-level teaching experience is preferred.

The successful candidate will offer courses in Ceramics (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced) along with one or more courses designed by the applicant to fit within our Foundations program, see examples here: https://www.whitmancollegeart.org/foundations. The candidate will also be responsible for oversight of the ceramics area, which includes supervising work study students and maintenance of the studio.

Whitman College is committed to cultivating a diverse learning community. Applicants should explain how their classroom will serve to create and sustain an inclusive learning environment. This statement can be included in the cover letter or the teaching statement. In their cover letter, candidates should address their interest in working at a liberal arts college with undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction.

To apply, go to https://whitman.bamboohr.com/jobs/view.php?id=46. The online application will prompt you to share a link where we can view all of the required materials: 1) a cover letter describing your teaching, scholarship, and service; 2) curriculum vitae; 3) a website or PDF of 20 images of personal artwork; 4) statement of teaching philosophy; 5) PDF of 20 images of student artwork; and 6) contact information for three references.

Review of applications will begin on March 15, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

The Studio Art Program at Whitman College is housed in the Fouts Center for the Visual Arts, a 38,000 square foot facility with studios in Painting, Sculpture, Drawing, New Media, Printmaking, Ceramics, Photography, and Book Arts. Within this space, the candidate will have a personal studio and office adjacent to the Ceramics studio.

Whitman College is building a diverse academic community and especially encourages applications from women, members of historically underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, and others who would bring additional dimensions to the college's learning environment.
