Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics
Whitman College

Contingent upon approval of the Board of Trustees, the Classics Department at Whitman College is seeking candidates for a one-year generalist position in Classics at the rank of visiting assistant professor, beginning August 2021.  A Ph.D. is required.

We seek a candidate who is committed to the mission of the liberal arts and who will teach courses that approach the ancient Greek and Roman worlds and their continued impacts in ways that critically and meaningfully engage students who have a broad range of backgrounds, experiences, and interests. The successful candidate will offer courses in ancient Greek and Latin, as well as courses in translation on the cultural contexts of the ancient Mediterranean. Area of specialization is open; however, we are especially interested in candidates who might teach courses addressing intersections between multiple categories of difference, be they gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, class, and/or health and disability. Candidates whose teaching and research involve reception studies, rhetoric, digital humanities, and/or global antiquity are also encouraged to apply. The annual teaching load is five courses.

Whitman College is committed to cultivating a diverse learning community. Applicants should explain how their classroom will serve to create and sustain an inclusive learning environment. This statement can be included in the cover letter or the teaching statement. In their cover letter, candidates should address their interest in working at a liberal arts college with undergraduates, majors as well as non-majors, at all levels of instruction.

To apply, go to https://whitman.bamboohr.com/jobs/view.php?id=45. The online application will prompt you to share a link where we can view all of the required materials: a letter of application; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy; evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction; and contact information for three references. Suggestions on how to do this could be to put these materials in a shared Google folder or Drop Box and share that link.

Review of applications will begin on March 15, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

Whitman College is building a diverse academic community and especially encourages applications from women, members of historically underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, and others who would bring additional dimensions to the college's learning environment. Whitman College is an EEO employer.
