Academically JSU, which has been dubbed “the friendliest campus in the South”, offers 43 undergraduate and 49 graduate programs (two at the doctoral level, 4 EdS, 6 graduate certificates and 37 masters) in a variety of disciplines that prepare graduates for meaningful careers and ongoing education. About the Position 

Jacksonville State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean, School of Education beginning no later than July 1, 2021.

The Dean, who reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, is the chief administrator of the School, responsible for providing academic leadership that fosters excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, and community engagement/service. He/she has the responsibility for academic planning, including continuous evaluation of academic programs, and developing short- and long-term goals for academic growth. He/she is responsible for administrative functions, including but not limited to staffing, budgets, and facility management. The Dean positively represents the school and the University to all constituents and is active in advancement activities.

The School of Education offers traditional and online programs of study at the baccalaureate, master’s and educational specialist levels. The school’s theme is “Reaching a World-Class Standard”, demonstrated by its numerous national accreditation statuses. The School offers 10 undergraduate programs, 13 graduate programs and 15 distance education programs. Additionally, it has proposed six new programs to begin in Fall 2021; five at the bachelor’s level and one at the master’s level. These six programs will continue to establish JSU as the leader in teacher preparation in the state, addressing not only traditional needs and teacher shortages, but also emerging needs and trends. Following a successful rollout of these programs, the School of Education also envisions the development of a high-demand Doctor of Education in Teaching and Learning, with a potential start in Academic Year 2022-23.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Overall Leadership:

·       Provide strategic leadership in establishing and achieving the School’s vision, mission, goals and student learning outcome

·       Articulate a vision and strategic plan for evaluating the academic programs and curricula and identify new programs in collaboration with program committees, faculty, staff, and students

·       Maintain effective communication with faculty, staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders

·       Inspire confidence and motivate others for engagement and innovation

·       Address conflict constructively and fairly

·       Support the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion

·       Remain loyal to the School and its purposes

·       Be visible on campus and in the community

·       Represent the School and University positively in interactions with professions and academic groups at local, state and national levels

·       Build and sustain effective relationships with a broad range of internal and external constituents

·       Encourage and facilitate supportive interdisciplinary relationships between the School and its related professions

 

REGULATION AND ACCREDITATION COMPLIANCE:

·       Ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies for academic programs (CACREP, NCATE, AAFCS, SACSCOC)

·       Develop and maintain a systematic evaluation plan for the academic programs to ensure congruence with national standards, professional guidelines, or expected competencies and to evaluate program outcomes

 

FACULTY AND STAFF OVERSIGHT:

·       Provide oversight for new faculty orientation programs and overall faculty/staff development, organization, evaluation, and continuous improvement of all programs

·       Facilitate the accomplishment of faculty expectations related to teaching, scholarly activity, service/community engagement, and professional practice

·       Serve as an advocate for faculty, staff, and students

·       Oversee an effective evaluation process for faculty and staff

·       Manage human capital within the School in collaboration with Human Resources

 

RELATIONSHIPS AND PROBLEM SOLVING:

·       Act on behalf of the School to collaborate and build relationships with other University schools and departments

·       Inspire faculty and staff to work together to build and sustain outstanding academic programs with the capacity for growth

·       Utilize collaboration in establishing and maintaining robust alliances external to the department and/or University

·       Direct problem-solving involving students, faculty, staff, and agencies

 

FISCAL AND FUNDRAISING:

·       Ensure effective management of financial resources (state funding, foundation accounts, etc.) including strategic budget planning that aligns financial needs with the mission and vision of the School and University

·       Interact with alumni and community partners to raise funds for the School and University and to enhance the reputation of the school

·       Direct departmental/school advancement and fundraising in collaboration with University Development

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Participate in all official JSU functions as determined by the president and provost

·       Oversee delivery of classes in a manner to achieve cost-effectiveness and meet student and program needs

·       Oversee School and program procedures related to tracking, mandatory record keeping, regulatory compliance, and outcome management

·       Oversee School/department committees, serve on University and professional committees, and represent the School or University on external committees

·       Attend and participate in professional conferences and meetings on and off campus

·       Read and remain current on contracts, grants, University policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations affecting higher education

·       Promote, publicize and positively represent the programs within the School

·       Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • An earned terminal degree in a discipline within the school or a related field
  • Three to five years as an academic administrator (e.g. Director, department head, or Associate Dean)
  • Faculty credentials commensurate with the rank of Professor or Associate Professor

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated pattern of sound judgement, tact, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Experience with developing and managing budgets, faculty governance, schedule planning, student recruitment, and curriculum development
