Purpose of Position
The Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Biology (Kinesiology), effective August 2021. The University seeks a teacher-scholar committed to undergraduate education who will engage a diverse group of students in creative intellectual challenges and pursue a robust research program in their field. The successful applicant must be able to support the development of a new major in Kinesiology and teach courses such as Introduction to Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Biostatistics, or Biomechanics and contribute to the Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology major. The applicant may have the opportunity to develop courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, teach lower division courses in our Liberal Learning Core, and support the M.S. in Environmental Science. The nominal teaching load for this appointment is 3-3.
The Ph.D. in Kinesiology, Biology, or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Preference will be given to candidates with post-doc experience. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank and ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.
Departmental Information
The department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry is composed of 21 faculty members and housed in an $80 Million integrated science building that includes dedicated research space for faculty in three departments and has over $1M of instrumentation, including ICP-OES, HPLC, FTIR, X-ray diffractometer, fluorometer and fluorescence plate reader, UV/Vis, GC-MS, LC-MS, a 400 MHz NMR, confocal microscope, real-time thermocycler, and other standard molecular biology equipment as well as a vivarium. The department oversees roughly 450 students who are in pursuit of the B.S. degree in Biology with majors in both Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology and Kinesiology and the B.S. degree in Chemistry with majors in both Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department works in conjunction with the Psychology department to support the B.S. degree in Neuroscience through the Neuroscience program.
