Leeward Community College on the Island of Oʻahu invites applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Position No. 89070. The Vice Chancellor is responsible for the overall leadership of academic affairs and support activities for the administration of academic divisions (Arts & Sciences and Career Technical Education) as well as Student Services (counseling, recruitment, admissions & records, financial aid, student life, health center, and job placement), Academic Services (educational media center, library, IT services, tutoring, and disability services, professional development, and theatre), Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development and the Office of Planning, Policy and Assessment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic Administration - 40 %

  • Provides leadership to the overall academic development of the College and ensures compliance with all applicable University regulations regarding curriculum and programs. Externally the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs represents the academic interests of Leeward Community College.
  • Coordinates all academic programs with respect to cross-divisional matters, including curriculum and schedules. Provides direction for faculty development. Facilitates cross-division problem solving and decision-making. Makes cross-divisional decisions that have not been otherwise delegated or assigned and that cannot be made through consensus (e.g., scheduling, lectureship funding, and budgeting decisions required to avoid overspending). The Vice Chancellor’s approval is required to commit Academic Affairs resources.
  • Oversees the overall development of credit curriculum, courses, activities related to learning and teaching, and student services. Ensures compliance with College and University rules and regulations regarding course and program approvals. Oversees student services plans, activities, and performance. Integrates student services with instruction.
  • Oversees the coordination and management of internal and external credit course and degree articulation agreements.
  • Oversees program review activities and overall assessment of programs.
  • Serves as a contributing member of the Chancellor’s Staff and performs academic affairs tasks assigned by the Chancellor.
  • Represents the College in academic affairs matters.

Personnel Administration - 30%

  • Oversees activities of academic affairs personnel and assures that performance is at an acceptable level; supervises and evaluates staff and program outcomes, and recommends to the Chancellor personnel transactions that relate to hiring, leaves, evaluations, and terminations.
  • Supervises administrators of academic programs in the Academic Affairs unit, the Dean of Student Services, the Dean of Academic Services, the Office of Planning, Policy and Assessment as well as personnel in the Office of the Chief Academic Officer.

Fiscal Administration - 25%

  • Oversees proposals and/or reports for submission and may administer contracts and grants for the Vice Chancellor and/or Chancellor’s Office. May serve as the principal investigator for major academic contracts and grants.
  • Oversees budget preparation and expenditures for the Vice Chancellor and/or Chancellor’s Office.

Other - 5%

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chancellor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • Attained the academic rank of C-5 (professor) or have demonstrated record of comparable professional experience prior to appointment
  • Experience in an institution of higher learning involving teaching, counseling or academic support responsibilities.
  • Evidence of ability to organize and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing).
  • Knowledge of alternative models for delivering and supporting instruction, of academic administration, and of post-secondary education and training.
  • Ability to provide leadership in academic program/curriculum development, faculty and staff development, assessment, student services, academic support, grant writing and administration of contracts, grants, and continuing education.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION

  • Doctorate degree.
  • Experience as an academic administrator with emphasis on educational activities, personnel management, and budget development and execution in a community college setting.
  • Five years of full time teaching experience in an institution of higher education preferably at a community college.
  • Experience and proven success in areas related to assessment and accreditation activities.
  • Knowledge of community college philosophy, technical-occupational education, and liberal arts education.
  • Knowledge of the community college mission as it relates to economic development in Hawaii and the Pacific Rim.
  • Knowledge of the community service/continuing education mission of a community college and its interrelationship to instructional programs and support services.
  • Skills in computer usage in management of an educational institution.
  • Experience in leading a campus accreditation review and strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, work with teams, mediate and resolve conflict, find positive solutions, and share in defining and leading change.
