The University of South Carolina (UofSC) invites nominations and applications for an exceptional leader to serve as the Vice President for System Affairs. The Vice President for System Affairs works to create a system that is interactive, interoperative and highly coordinated.

Reporting to the President of the University of South Carolina System, the Vice President for System Affairs works strategically to provide greater access and capitalize on economies of scale to provide a broad range of high quality, affordable educational programs. The Vice President for System Affairs is not an oversight authority, but a member of the president’s staff. The Vice President for System Affairs will supervise two direct reports.

Major duties and tasks of the VP for System Affairs include but are not limited to:

  • Leverage the geographic and mission diversity of the UofSC system institutions to effectively serve the state of South Carolina. 
  • Support development, implementation and assessment of a system-wide strategic plan that promotes and sustains the individual institutions while strengthening the overall system, with the goal of developing operating systems and processes that promote efficient and effective system operations that are respectful of the academic and business character, distinct culture, and autonomy of each institution.
  • Develop system wide transfer and pathway academic programs.
  • Work to develop a system wide core curriculum that facilitates transfer programs.
  • As the System Leadership Council framework, develop an internal university system governance structure that establishes high-impact autonomy, service excellence, and consistent policies while optimizing performance.
  • Optimize a collaborative system approach to enrollment management to ensure effective and efficient coordination.
  • Implement a structure that facilitates strategic system wide new program planning to maximize efficiencies. Assess shared services to better define, assess and enhance the potential benefits of the core functions of the university system.
  • Scan the higher education environment at the regional, national and international levels for initiatives that can be undertaken as a system. 
  • Represent all UofSC institutions at critical process and system oriented committee meetings.
  • Advise the Chancellors and President on emerging opportunities in the state.
  • Advise and inform the Chancellors and President of processes and procedures under consideration that may impact the various institutions. 
  • Identify grant and foundation funding opportunities for strategic collaborations. 
  • Serves on the President’s Cabinet to advise the president’s staff, chancellors, board members, and other constituents. Serves on the System Leadership Council as the coordinator and monitor, but remains a non-voting member.
  • Collect data and relevant information to inform the President and Chancellors on the annual progress toward attainment of the UofSC system goals and strategic priority 5.
  • Help build a culture of recognition and respect for the diverse roles and missions represented in each unique UofSC system institution.
  • Supervises the review of system wide policies and leads the System Policy Review Council.
  • Assist in reinforcing institutional autonomy by referring campus issues to the appropriate university Chancellors.
  • Supports the UofSC System Affairs Office and provides management and coordination of system personnel who lead system-wide initiatives, such as the System Leadership Development program and System online initiatives.


A Ph.D. or a terminal degree and experience as an academic administrator leading a team of academicians and staff at a higher education institution in a university system.
