Chair of Nursing

Spalding University is seeking a visionary leader to provide planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the nursing program. 

Description: The Chair is the Chief Academic Officer of the School of Nursing and is responsible for providing leadership and supervision for all programs and services of the School. The Chair presides at all School of Nursing Faculty Meetings, that are scheduled on a regular basis in accord with the University’s meeting schedule.

Appointment and Evaluation: The Chair of the School of Nursing is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the President of the University.  The Chair reports to and is evaluated annually by the Faculty of the School of Nursing the Deans of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, and the Provost of the University.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. The Chair of the School of Nursing is responsible for assuring full compliance with the Mission, Strategic Plan, Policies and Procedures of the University, and the Philosophy and Vision of the School specifically:  

• in collaboration with faculty, coordinates the School’s long-range and strategic planning initiatives and submits them to the Provost of the University;

• in collaboration with the School’s Coordinating Committee prepares the School’s annual budget and submits it to the Provost of the University for approval. The Chair reviews and authorizes all expenditures for programs, vendors, contracts, and services in accord with University policy. The Chair is responsible to see that these units remain within their approved budgets;

• receives, reviews and coordinates all written reports (School monthly reports, Minutes of Meetings, Annual Reports, marketing and public relations initiatives, catalog material, etc.) and submit copies and proposals as required to respective units of the University;

• collaborates with Program Directors and recommends to the appropriate administrative officers, the appointment of faculty and staff and is specifically responsible:

• to obtain, to verify, and to evaluate the credentials of those so recommended;
• to assure the appropriate professional performance and development, including appropriate research of faculty and to evaluate faculty as prescribed in the University Policy and Procedure Manual;
• to recommend the appointment of faculty, change of status, based on valuations, to the Deans of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies and the Provost of the University in accord with University policies and procedures.

• assures the academic quality, integrity and fiscal viability of programs through a process of continuous and periodic systematic review and evaluation for presentation and with recommendations to the Undergraduate and Graduates Deans and to the Provost of the University, in collaboration with Program Directors and faculty, and has responsibility for: 

• all School programs, and curriculum development including new initiatives;
• coordinating the scheduling of courses in consultation with Program Directors, other Chairs and Departments and submits schedules to the appropriate University departments;
• assuring that all programs and services meet the requirements and standards of internal and external approval bodies and accrediting agencies;
• reviewing, maintaining, developing, evaluating and the approval of instructional resources, including contractual agreements with clinical affiliating agencies, equipment, including library holdings, necessary for the maintenance and development of academic programs;
• reviewing and approving grant proposals that will benefit new and existing programs in the School of Nursing.

• collaborating with faculty, Program Directors, and University departments in the recruitment of students, their admission to programs, the evaluation of their progress, and to recommend candidates for degrees, awards and honors;

• ​serves as the final recourse in the School of Nursing for students experiencing problems with policies and procedures, faculty, or grades and to assure that University procedures are followed;

• ​​​​​​represents the School of Nursing on designated University Councils/Committees, coordinates the School’s Advisory Board, and to maintain other external relations that serve the interest of the School of Nursing and the University;

• ​​​​​assures the implementation of and adherence to all School of Nursing and University policies and procedures by School faculty, staff, and students and to report deviations to the Undergraduate and Graduates Deans and to the Provost of the University Provost;  

• ​​​​​​promotes within the School, with other Schools and Departments in the University, and in the health care, civic and faith communities, a working climate conductive to cooperation and collaboration to promote and advance the Mission of the University and the Vision of the School of Nursing and the Mission of the University.

Qualifications:   The Chair shall hold a Doctoral Degree, preferably in Nursing, a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in administration and research in higher education in nursing (undergraduate and graduate) and holds an unencumbered license as a registered nurse and be eligible for licensure in Kentucky. Maintains membership in local, state and national nursing and other professional organizations that will enhance the Mission of the University and the Vision of the School of Nursing.
