Job Description

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Advising, the Academic Advisor serves as a full-time (calendar year) administrative/professional faculty member in the Pamplin College of Business. The major areas of responsibility include academic advising for undergraduate students in all six business majors (75%) and performing duties related to New Student Orientation, ongoing training and professional development, and tasks relevant to special talents or areas of interest (20%). Additional job duties may include department liaison tasks and assisting colleagues as needed (5%).
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide holistic, student-focused academic advising services to approximately 550
undergraduate students through individual appointments, emails, etc.
- Deliver accurate information and advice to students about majors, minors, course options,
study abroad, transfer credits, extracurricular activities, and campus resources
- Assist students in developing a comprehensive educational plan that serves to meet their
academic and career goals
- Interpret and explain department, college, and university academic policies and procedures
- Initiate academic intervention for students in academic difficulty
- Provide individualized support and assess student needs to make appropriate referrals to
campus resources
- Participate in all aspects of New Student Orientation
- Engage in professional development activities to remain current with academic advising best
practices
- Participate in Pamplin Commencement activities
- Occasionally provide limited services outside of normal work hours

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the liaison to assigned department(s)
- Perform additional duties relevant to special talents or areas of interest
- Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in business, education, counseling, or a related field coupled with training
and/or experience which may equate to an advanced degree
- Working knowledge of academic advising offices, programs, policies and software
- Previous professional student-focused experience in a higher education setting (e.g. academic
advising, career advising, student affairs, etc.)
- Previous experience working with diverse student populations
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality and
discretion
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications

- Master’s degree in business, education, counseling, higher education administration, or related field
- Previous professional academic advising experience in a business discipline
- Experience using student information systems such as Banner and Navigate
- Working knowledge of university academic policies and procedures
- Member of NACADA or similar professional organization
