General Description

The Associate Director for Asia and the Middle East is a major gift officer in the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Office of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). The Associate Director is responsible for various aspects of the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a combined portfolio of roughly 75-100 major and principal gift prospects, including individuals and institutions. Working under the oversight and leadership of the Director of Development, the successful candidate will identify a specific number of new prospects to support SAIS’ regionally-based programming that focuses on Asia and the Middle East, with an emphasis on key emerging research centers and initiatives on the Study of Contemporary China, the Indo-Pacific, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center (HNC), Middle East Studies, and other identified or related programs.

The Associate Director will serve as the primary liaison staffing SAIS’ HNC Council of 12-18 volunteers. They provide institutional guidance, advice, and leading resources to the HNC, its American Co-Director, and staff. Members of the HNC Council formally meet semi-annually with select subcommittees of the Council meets quarterly. Collaborating with the Senior Development Coordinator for Volunteer Engagement, the Associate Director will staff the Council’s Chairperson, the HNC’s American Co-Director, and other select Council subcommittee leaders. She or he will fashion meeting agendas, maintain the Council’s membership pipeline, produce regular financial and operational reports as well as assist in determining the annual fundraising strategy and objectives for the HNC and the HNC Council.

In 2021, the Associate Director will also serve as the primary gift officer associated with SAIS’ event programming, celebrations, and fundraising campaign honoring the 35thAnniversary of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center’s founding. She or he will manage and execute the HNC’s 35thAnniversary fundraising campaign, pursue select funding priorities, supervise a small working group of fundraising volunteers, and partner with the Director of Constituent Engagement and the HNC’s Development Assistant on events, mailings, and programming associated with the HNC’s 35thAnniversary year (the formal 35thAnniversary celebrations are scheduled to take place in Nanjing, China on 22-24 October 2021).

The Associate Director will attend to a portfolio of individuals, foundations, and corporations, and select government grants, emphasizing pipeline development for new areas of engagement in Asia and the Middle East. Additionally, the Associate Director will focus on research and proposal development, bringing together appropriate participants from across Johns Hopkins to support the Director of Development and the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations strategy. Periodically, the Associate Director will support SAIS and HNC events and alumni activities (virtual or in-person) targeting constituencies in Asia or Middle East regions.

The Associate Director will work closely with SAIS team members working on fundraising initiatives related to Asia and the Middle East. Specifically, she or he will collaborate with the Associate Director of Development, Corporate and Foundation Relations on the execution and stewardship of pre-existing grants as well as the formation of new proposals pursuing foundations, corporations, and governmental entities that may support School initiatives or research efforts focused on specifically on China, Asia and/or the Middle East regions. The Associate Director will also regularly coordinate with the Assistant Director of Annual Giving to craft annual mailings, email communications, and targeted outreach to prospects and key alumni and non-alumni constituents on behalf of Asia Programs, Middle East Studies, the HNC, and other related School initiatives such as SAIS’ Foreign Policy Institute and its Zbigniew Brzezinski Initiative. Additionally, the Associate Director will support the division’s Development Coordinator in properly stewarding donors who have created named funds (fellowships, internships, professorships) as well as donors in Asia or the Middle East who qualify for mandatory stewardship.

The Associate Director will serve as a primary representative of SAIS DAR activities in Asia and the Middle East - in various settings, interacting with both internal and external stakeholders. The Associate Director also interact often with the staff of SAIS’ proposed regional based research initiatives/centers focused on China and the Indo-Pacific as well as the HNC. She or he will build collaborative relations with individual School-based faculty and staff whose work is focused on regional challenges and global issues associated with China, Asia, and the Middle East, as well as faculty and staff outside of the School into the broader University whose work may be able to advance the mission of SAIS and Johns Hopkins University in Asia and the Middle East.

Founded in 1943 and a Johns Hopkins division since 1950, The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for over 75 years. As a highly selective graduate institution with a distinguished faculty, SAIS consistently ranks as one of the world’s top international relations schools. The School was founded to provide a practical approach to training students in international leadership and foreign relations and to provide mid-career educational opportunities for those already working in related fields. Today, SAIS offers 11 distinct Master’s degree programs led by its flagship 64 credit MAIR as well as other full, part-time, and online reduced credit degree programs. Additionally, the School sponsors two doctoral degree program tracks, the Ph.D. and DIA SAIS enrolls approximately 700 full-time students on the Washington, DC campus, 200 students at its SAIS Europe campus in Bologna, Italy, and 170 students at its Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience required. Additional graduate-level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The ability to multi-task while working under pressure and meet deadlines is required. Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Attention to detail and executing timely follow-through on projects are essential—a good sense of humor and collaborating with various partners. Experience with event planning is necessary.

Experience with travel overseas, a willingness and ability to travel (both domestically and internationally) for several months a year, spread over multiple trips, is expected. Up to (and sometimes exceeding) 25% of working time will be spent in the Middle East and Asia regions. This position will be responsible for pipeline development of new markets; therefore, the position requires the ability to travel freely within the target regions to specific countries and markets as determined by the Director of Development, the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, the Dean of SAIS.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced training in international studies or other related field is strongly preferred. Five or more years of experience preferred. Demonstrated experience working in fundraising and development, an interest in or experience working in Asia or U.S.-China relations, and proficiency in an Asian or Middle Eastern language preferred (with an additional preference for Korean, Mandarin, or Arabic). Familiarity with University nomenclature, protocols, and programs, as well as any previous experience with complex donor databases.
